Job Summary
The Department of Art and Art History in the College of Liberal Arts, at the University of Texas at Arlington, invites applications for an Assistant Professor, Tenure Track faculty member in Design.

Teaching specializations: the Design area offers degrees at the BA/BFA/MFA levels and is the largest program in our department, serving a wide range of student needs across the discipline. Applicants must be qualified to teach within a variety of aspects of Design and should be especially comfortable instructing on the usage of traditional graphic design principles within emerging technology and interactive design applications.
We seek dynamic candidates with outstanding qualifications, strong research interests and a growing record of research, alongside effective teaching abilities in the field of graphic design, emerging technology, or more broadly across visual communication design.
The successful candidate will work with MFA Design students either in coursework, in committees, or as their Committee Chair. Additionally, excellent communication with other faculty members and students is paramount to success in this faculty role.
In addition to research and teaching workloads, all tenure stream faculty are expected to serve on departmental, college, and/or university committees, as well as serve as undergraduate faculty advisor and conduct portfolio reviews, as well as mentor undergraduate and graduate students in Design. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Candidate must be well trained within the field of graphic design, with a strong understanding of design principles, design history, print design, web design, and more broadly across visual communication design.
The candidate would need to be a versatile designer, with an emphasis on new technological skills within the field.
Personal creative practice and industry experience backgrounds are strongly preferred.
The candidate needs to demonstrate strong research interests and potential as an incoming member of the tenure track faculty.
The selected candidate must continue to develop their work and reputation as an actively practicing designer, and researcher.
Required Qualifications
A terminal degree (MFA/MDes/PhD) in Communication Design, Visual Communications, Graphic Design, or a related field from an accredited (recognized equivalent) university
Exceptional knowledge in one or more areas of advanced design focus (e.g., web design, mobile application design, advanced packaging design, etc.)
Demonstrated knowledge of design principles, standards, and concepts applied to communication design work in professional portfolio
Ability to teach at all levels of the undergraduate and graduate curriculum
Expertise in Mac OS and Adobe Suite
Demonstration of ability to contribute to the excellence of the academic community through teaching, advising, and service
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Actively researching at a national and/or international level
A working knowledge of the ideation and creation of design deliverables in both tangible and interactive spaces: research, concept sketching, user flows, lo-fi and hi-fi layouts, prototype development, testing, product finalization, presentation
An effective mentor and advisor of students
Preferred Qualifications
Minimum two (2) years of teaching experience in design courses at the university level
Minimum of two (2) years of professional design work experience
Ability to develop and nurture a competitive curriculum, including proposals for special topics courses that would enhance the academic goals of the Design program
Expert user and instructor of applicable software and digital technologies engaged with current trends grounded in the concepts, principles, and practices of interactive design
Excellent record of active participation in professional organizations
Additional exceptional knowledge in specialized areas such as: Web Design, Mobile App Design, Interactive Design, Motion Graphics, Emerging Technology, Fabrication, Information Graphics, Packaging Design, Data Visualization, UI/UX, etc.
A working knowledge of industry tools: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, XD, After Effects, Figma, InVision, Sketch, etc.
Graduate-level research/thesis supervision and advising experience
Record of grant awarded activity
Experience conducting portfolio reviews
