Michigan ENT & Allergy is a fast paced ENT practice with multiple locations in West Michigan. We have four full time clinics in Holland, Grand Haven, Grand Rapids, and Grandville, MI. Michigan ENT currently employs 8 otolaryngologists, 1 neurotologist, and 6 physician assistants. Michigan Hearing Experts is the audiology department of the practice and currently employs 7 full time audiologists, 1 part time audiologists, 2 paid 4th year externs, and hosts students from Central Michigan Univeristy and Grand Valley State University.

Our fourth year audiology externships will include opportunities to complete diagnostic testing including behavioral audiometry, conditioned play audiometry, visual reinforcement audiometry, tympanometry, acoustic reflexes, and otoacoustic emissions; selection, fitting, and verification of hearing aids; videonystagmography; and evaluation, activation, and mapping of cochlear implants.

Administers Diagnostic Tests

  • Performs audiological evaluations including:
    • Behavioral audioemtry
    • Conditioned play audiometry
    • Visual reinforcement audiometry
    • Tympanometry
    • Acoustic Reflexes
    • Otoacoustic Emissions
    • Weber
  • Provides amplification services including:
    • Communication needs assessment
    • Fitting of hearing devices and assistive technologies
    • Assessment of hearing devices including regular clean and checks
    • Conformity evaluations
    • Verification of devices using electroacoustic analysis, real ear to coupler difference, and live speech mapping
  • Provides osseointegrated device fitting and checks
  • Performs cochlear implant evaluations, activations, and mappings
  • Coordinates and interprets test results
  • Consults with and makes recommendation on hearing disorders to physicians
  • Based on test results, diagnose audio vestibular disorders
  • Coordinates care with physicians and other providers
  • Completes chart notes for each patient seen and sends written report to referring physician and primary care physician as needed

Manages Hearing Rehabilitation

  • Counsels patients regarding test results
  • Makes recommendation regarding hearing care options
  • Reviews products available to improve hearing impairment
  • Fits appropriate hearing care products and warranties as deemed necessary to meet the needs of the patient
  • Provides hearing aid dispensing, including selection, fitting, ear-mold acoustics, ongoing management with follow-up, and education.
  • Demonstrates and sells Assistive Listening Devices (ALD's), batteries, and other special products
  • Performs hearing aid repairs
  • Performs hearing aid checks and cleaning

Miscellaneous Duties

  • Aware of marketing activities
  • Maintains positive relationships with various vendors
  • Assists patients with exchanges or returns as needed
  • Involved in clinical quality outcomes, including efficiency and productivity
  • Provides excellent patient service and maintains good public relations
  • Under the direction of the Practice Administrator and Audiology Leads, assists in the development and maintenance of audiology office procedures and protocols
  • Practices good safety and infection control protocols
  • Exercises confidentiality as it relates to business information

  • Excellent interpersonal skills that allow effective working relationships with a diverse patient, colleague, and vendor population. This includes listening, sales, and problem-solving skills
  • Strong keyboard/computer/Audiology diagnostic and hearing aid software and equipment experience

  • Must be detail oriented

Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship: Basic adult audiological evaluation.
Fitting of hearing aids. Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship: Performs behavioral audiometry, conditioned play audiometry, visual reinforcement audiometry, tympanometry, acoustic reflexes, and otoacoustic emissions; selection, fitting, and verification of hearing aids; videonystagmography; and evaluation, activation, and mapping of cochlear implants.
Coordinates and interprets test results
Consults with and makes recommendation on hearing disorders to physicians
Based on test results, diagnosis audio vestibular disorders
