The Medicine Nephrology Unit consists of 22 beds.

This unit is part of our new collaborative care model, where a grouping of ten patients is cared for by a team consisting of RN, LPN and a dedicated CTA.

The unit is divided into two groupings or pods, to care for a medicine surgical patient population, with a focus of renal disease, acute dialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and all other medicine related diagnosis.

There are also two dedicated comfort care/end of life suites, which are staffed with a dedicated concierge RN, providing care for the patient and family during the final stages of life.

The Collaborative Care Model is an innovative new strategy dedicated to making sure that the Post Trauma unit has the right resources at the right place for our patients in a way that can be easily modified it to the patient's unique needs.

In this model, a collaborative team made up of a Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, and Care Team Associate will be assigned to a certain number of patients.

In addition to those primary roles, there will also be additional support staff of a direct care pharmacist, a phlebotomist, and an EVS (Environmental Services) attendant.

This model puts all the right people in all the right places to give the best care we can to our patients.


Elevate your career with OU Health's LPN to BSN Degree Accelerator program through the University of Oklahoma College of Nursing, designed to empower Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) to seamlessly transition to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.

We shoulder the financial responsibility, covering costs for LPNs in the LPN to BSN RN program, which offers asynchronous classes, Oklahoma-based clinical rotations, and internet-based coursework to accommodate working nurses.

This flexible hybrid program, spanning 60 credit hours, blends 30 credit hours from advanced standing examination and 30 from program enrollment, providing an accessible pathway for LPNs to enhance their education and professional growth within the nursing field.

Are Full-Time and Part-Time (0.6 or more FTE) LPN employees

Have been continuously employed by OU Health for a minimum of 6 months

Have a minimum of 1 year LPN experience

All those admitted to the program must remain employed by OU Health through program completion.

General Description:


Under general supervision, provides preventative and health care to an assigned group of patients or clients in the OU Health facility.


Essential Responsibilities:
Responsibilities listed in this section are core to the position. Inability to perform these responsibilities with or without an accommodation may result in disqualification from the position.

  • Will assist with the nursing assessment through data collection, observation, and obtainment of vital signs on assigned patients or clients.
  • Provide care according to an established nursing plan.
  • Observe changes in patient's condition and notify supervisory personnel if significant changes occur.
  • Provide routine ostomy care, nasogastric tube placement and feeding and placement and discontinuing of oralgastric tube. Will initiate and monitor oxygen therapy according to physician orders or unit protocol.
  • Will suction and clean tracheotomy sites.
  • May administer oral, intravenous, intramuscular, intradermal, subcutaneous, sublingual, vaginal, rectal and topical medications.
  • Prepare patients for routine physical examinations and assist the physician during examinations.
  • An LPN can function in the role of Surgical Tech if position open is in the operating room.

General Responsibilities:
Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
Completion of educational requirements for NCLEX-PN examination.

Experience:
None required. One or more years of experience preferred.

Licensure/Certifications/Registrations Required:

Current LPN License issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing, or a current multistate compact LPN License (eNLC).

Current Basic Life Support issued by the American Heart Association required upon hire.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of professional nursing theories, practices, techniques, and procedures.
  • Ability to organize, coordinate, plan and evaluate nursing needs of assigned patients.
  • Must be knowledgeable about operating room techniques if applying for a surgery position.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills
