About the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics

The college is home to five academic departments: Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Geography and the Environment, Mathematics, and Physics and Astronomy. About the Department of Biological Sciences

The Department of Biological Sciences focuses on two areas of research and teaching: 1) Cell and Molecular Biology - including biophysics, neuroscience, cell signaling, and developmental biology, and 2) Ecology, Biodiversity - including behavioral ecology, plant-insect interactions, conservation biology, restoration ecology, and evolution. The department offers undergraduate majors of study including Biology (B.A./B.S.), Molecular Biology (B.S./B.S.), Ecology, and BioDiversity (B.A./B.S.) Physiology of Health and Disease (BS) and Integrated Sciences (B.A.). A concentration in Cognitive Neurosciences (B.A./B.S.) is also offered in conjunction with the Department of Psychology. At the graduate level, the department offers M.S. and Ph.D. with a research emphasis in either of the two research areas described above.

Position Summary

The Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Denver invites applications for two tenure track faculty positions at the Assistant Professor level for the academic year beginning September 1, 2024.

We are seeking candidates with established research experience using zebra fish to understand the changes in cardiomyocytes during heart regeneration. The candidate will establish a funded research program in this area and will lead a project to develop an inducible tissue-specific knock-out system in zebrafish using CRISPR/Cas9. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in Genetic and Molecular Biology and post-doctoral research experience in cardiomyocytes and heart regeneration in zebra fish, will supervise Ph.D. and M.S. students and undergraduate research projects and will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in these areas of research expertise and also courses in general genetics and developmental biology. The candidate's research program should augment the research directions in the Department of Biological Sciences and-or the Knoebel Institute for Healthy Aging. Information on Departmental programs can be found at The research lab will be housed in the new Knoebel Institute for Healthy Aging and the candidate will have opportunity for interactions within the Institute. Existing research groups at the Institute are focused Alzheimer's disease, ALS, Parkinson's disease, Down syndrome and Healthy Aging. If research area is appropriate, successful applicants will also be eligible to apply for participation in the interdepartmental Molecular and Cellular Biophysics Ph.D. program

Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Genetics and Molecular Biology.
  • 5 or more years post-doctoral experience using zebra fish understand the changes in cardiomyocytes during heart regeneration
Working Environment
Standard office environment. Unexpected interruptions occur often and stress level is moderate to high. Noise level is quiet to moderate.Physical Activities
Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period. Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs. with assistance.Work Schedule

While the University's administrative offices are open Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, faculty schedules vary from term to term and are based on courses taught, service commitments, and research agendas. Salary Range:

The salary for this position is $85,000.
