4th year Extern (up to 4 positions available). The Department of Pediatric Audiology and Hearing Rehabilitation at St. Louis Children's Hospital offers a clinical externship where students are exposed to diverse and challenging clinical experiences. Our clients are between 0 – 21 years of age and often have a complex medical histories. The environment offers a fast paced schedule with an emphasis on evidence-based practice. Providing a superior patient experience is our number one goal. Our team participates in ongoing research projects giving patients access to the latest surgical, diagnostic, and technological applications.

Our team's clinicians and physicians are able to use this information to maximize hearing aid and cochlear implant benefit for patients.

D. program and a strong desire to join a team environment. Interested individuals should be highly motivated and possess a strong interest in working with hearing impaired children. Applicants should be able to multi-task and take initiative in their clinical and educational opportunities in a professional manner

Yes. Externs participate in trainings with the audiologists as well as attend monthly audiology grand round meetings.

Expected hours/days a week: 40 hrs/wk

Externs will rotate through our multi-disciplinary outpatient medical centers approximately 20 minutes from the main hospital.

Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship: Students should be comfortable participating in basic audiometric exams with children using VRA, CPA, and conventional testing methods. They should have a high level of motivation and professionalism.

Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship:

Students have opportunities to gain confidence with: otoscopy; acoustic immittance testing; air and bone conduction testing via BOA/VRA/CPA; hearing aid selection, fitting and verification; evaluation for cochlear implant candidacy; programming of cochlear implants; aided sound field and speech perception testing; FM/DM system evaluation, fitting, and verification; interaction with team members; and counseling parents.

There may also be opportunities to participate in research and/or auditory training if candidate is interested.
