Demographer - Portland, OR; Seattle, WA; or Remote (US)

FLO Analytics (FLO) is seeking a full-time Demographer to join our Portland, OR, Seattle, WA, or remote US team. As our ideal candidate, you excel in demographic analysis, possess strong project management skills, and have a knack for innovative thinking. In this role, you will be addressing technical and analytical challenges collaboratively. You'll be instrumental in fostering strong relationships with both existing and prospective clients, leveraging your expertise to provide exceptional service and guidance. Additionally, you will expand both your own and FLO's comprehensive understanding of demographic trends and data analytics, driving innovation and excellence in our practices. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the growth and development of our demographic work nationwide while also playing a vital role in building and strengthening our team.

Responsibilities

In this role, you will develop and report on student enrollment forecasts for K-12 school districts. Utilizing demographic methods and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) tools, you will analyze related data, including land use and housing development data, area of births, and net migration rates. You will apply appropriate methods, such as the cohort component model, to project population dynamics in support of student enrollment forecasting and occasionally other demographic analysis. Your responsibilities will include creating detailed data visualizations, such as summary tables, graphics, and maps, to support various planning projects and needs. Additionally, you will prepare and present comprehensive reports and analyses to school officials, school boards, and the public.

You will assist with attendance area boundary reviews, long-term planning, and capacity evaluations in conjunction with school-level forecasts. Project management is a significant part of your responsibilities, including gathering requirements, determining scopes, and estimating hours needed to develop and deliver custom solutions to our clients. Furthermore, you'll identify, recommend, and implement improvements to system designs and processing methodologies to enhance workflow efficiency, scalability, and reliability.

Collaboration is key, as you'll work closely with cross-functional internal and external team members and occasionally third-party entities, both as a project lead and a team member. You'll also have the opportunity to mentor and learn from other team members on various business development, technical, and client sector topics.

Qualifications

We require either 3+ years of experience with a bachelor's degree in Demography, Planning, Statistics, Geography, or a related field with coursework in demographic analysis and quantitative research methods, including population estimation and project methods, or 1+ years of experience with a master's degree or PhD in these fields. You must be proficient in mathematics and statistics, with familiarity in GIS applications and spatial data analysis. Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel is essential.

Strong organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills are a must, as well as the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment. You should be willing to work flexible hours, including occasionally overtime, to meet deadlines and travel as needed, thriving in a fast-paced setting.

Preferred Skills

Experience with data analysis and the ability to communicate results effectively is highly desirable. Experience in the consulting industry, particularly with school districts or local government, is beneficial. Familiarity with managing projects and teams, including developing and implementing scopes of work, budgets, and staff resource management, will set you apart.

Working knowledge of marketing and communications principles, analysis of census data, and data analysis tools, such as Python, R, SPSS, SAS, Stata, and SQL, is advantageous. Strong research, analytical, and presentation skills will further enhance your application.
