Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno, Extension is recruiting a statewide Livestock Specialist. This is a full-time, 12-month position, and will be hired at either the Lecturer, Teaching Assistant Professor, or Assistant Professor level, depending on the qualifications and experience of the successful applicant. The Livestock Specialist will be located in the Churchill County office in Fallon, Nevada. We are looking for a candidate who is passionate about helping Livestock producers, especially bovine and small ruminants, learn and improve their industry.

The primary role of the Livestock Specialist is to establish community-based education programming to better the livestock industry in Nevada. The position's duties include assessing community needs, developing and implementing relevant educational programming, and documenting program impacts. Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) education will be part of the duties. Additional roles and responsibilities include: 1) education in the communities; 2) providing subject matter expertise to colleagues in Extension and/or the University of Nevada, Reno; 3) developing resources (grants, gifts, budget enhancements); and 4) creating appropriate research, scholarly and/or creative works (peer-reviewed extension and journal publications, presentations at professional meetings, use of electronic media, etc). This position requires working effectively with diverse cultural and community interests and developing and maintaining solid working relationships. Required Qualifications

Lecturer II - A Master's degree, with either the BS or MS degree being in Animal Science or other related degree programs.

Teaching Assistant Professor - A Ph.D. in Animal Science or other related degree programs.

Assistant Professor - A Ph.D. in Animal Science or other related degree programs.

**For applicants with a Ph.D., the determination of tenure track or non-tenure track is at the hiring manager's discretion after discussing this with the applicant.

This position requires performing manual labor, lifting heavy objects greater than 20 pounds, driving long distances, working in inclement weather, working alone for extended periods, and interacting collegially with small and large teams.

A valid Class "C" driver's license or higher operator's license within 30 days of appointment.

Schedule or Travel Requirements
Work a flexible schedule, with periodic evening and weekend work
Periodically travel throughout the state to assist with multi-county or statewide efforts related to subject matter expertise or attend area and statewide Extension meetings

Preferred Qualifications

At least two years of experience in community education programming

Experience with fund acquisition

Churchill County Profile

Churchill County is located in west-central Nevada. Fallon, the county seat, is located at the junction of Highways 50 and 95. Churchill County features Sand Mountain, Lahontan State Recreation Area and Lake, Naval Air Station, Fallon National Wildlife Refuge, Churchill Vineyards, Frey Ranch Distillery, and the Fallon Paiute and Shoshone Tribes. Fallon is one of the primary agricultural regions in Nevada, including agriculture events and tourism. Mountainous areas are present to the east, northwest, and southwest. Fallon is only an hour's drive from the city of Reno with its outdoor ventures and airport.

Extension is a major unit of the University of Nevada, Reno, and resides in the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology & Natural Resources. Extension uses peer-reviewed research to find solutions to community-based issues and needs within six broad legislatively mandated areas: Agriculture; Children, Youth and Families; Community Development; Health and Nutrition; Horticulture; and Natural Resources.
