Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The Department of Biology at UNC-Chapel Hill is dedicated to the discovery and dissemination of new and existing knowledge in the broad discipline of Biology by maintaining a high-quality faculty who integrate cutting-edge research and student-focused teaching.

We are one of the largest academic departments in the College of Arts and Sciences. We have over 2,800 majors and we enroll over 5,000 undergraduate students in our classes each year. Our average total annual expenditures exceed $24 million, with nearly half of that coming from grant sponsored research.

The department is composed of 50 tenure-track faculty, 10 teaching faculty, 8 research faculty, and numerous active adjunct and emeritus faculty.

We currently have 50 graduate students, 40 post-docs and employ approximately 60 additional graduate and undergraduate students from across the university to assist in our teaching and research missions.

Our mission is supported by an administrative and technical staff of 20, with an additional 25 staff directly supporting research.

Position Summary

Biology 101L teaching position:
duties include instructing undergraduates enrolled in the Introductory Biology Lab course.

This course is organized and designed to reinforce topics covered in the lecture course and exposes students to collaboration and writing in the sciences.

Students will test hypotheses, collect data, discover, and think critically. Each week students will perform an experiment or do an activity that pertains to the biology topic.

Throughout the semester students will understand how to use the microscope, stain bacteria, perform experiments to test hypotheses, solve genetics problems, run a gel electrophoresis, study natural selection, and learn about anatomy by studying and dissecting preserved fetal pigs.

Students learn to write lab reports by creating outlines, then moving to a rough draft and then the full report.

Quizzes and tests will also be used to assess their performance in the lab.
The instructor grades all the assignments, teaches pre-lab lectures, and meets with students during flexible office hours if needed.

The instructor also meets with the Lab Coordinator each week to prepare for the content and procedures for the following week during required preparatory meetings.

Canvas and Labflow are the platforms used for accessing resources and grading in this course.

Strong evidence of competency in the teaching area.
