Aretum is seeking an experienced, focused FOIA Analyst (Senior) for a long-term task supporting a federal customer in Washington, DC. This position entails processing initial Freedom of Information Act requests, cradle-to-grave, and processing records associated with FOIA litigation matters as they arise. The desired candidate should have strong organizational and records management skills. Juris Doctor (Required).

Interested candidates shall have a thorough understanding of the FOIA and Privacy Act and be able to respond appropriately to requests, including providing information about the fee structures and allowances and waivers of fees.

Candidates should be able to independently draft responses for review by the Government, and therefore, must be proficient in written correspondence.

Candidate must have a thorough command of English and be proficient in communicating information to and from requestors as well as Government personnel about submissions/requests.

Minimum Skills:


• Candidate must be able to obtain/maintain Public Trust


• Determining FOIA procedural issues such as fee category determinations, fee waivers, and requests for expedited processing


• Preparing search memoranda for the appropriate record custodians


• Reviewing large record sets to identify responsive records


• Applying redactions (high-level knowledge of FOIA exemptions) to responsive records in accordance with the FOIA, USDA's FOIA regulations, and any applicable case law


• FOIA correspondence preparation


• Managing administrative files in accordance with internal SOPs


• Program-wide document search coordination


• Response-time scheduling and negotiation


• Completion of request reviews (release of appropriate materials)


• Application of FOIA Exemption(s)


• Familiarity with FOIA legal precedence


• Preparing FOIA appeal packages for legal sufficiency review


• Prepare Vaughn Indexes

Required Skills:


• Position requires a Juris Doctor (JD) degree; Minimum of five (5) years prior federal FOIA processing experience


• US Citizenship or Green Card Holder

Preferred Skills:


• Highly focused professional who enjoys processing simple and complex FOIA requests


• Possesses strong analytical and writing skills


• Bring a high level of detail to the role


• Strong team player
