Job Description

Summary : The Coordinator of Muslim Life works within the Spiritual life team as part of Student Life, supporting Queens' commitment to welcoming all people and nurturing relationships among people of different religious worldviews. The coordinator will challenge and nurture students, faculty and staff to deepen their faith, creating innovative programs that will enhance and represent Muslim life on campus. This is a temporary part-time position (up to 20 hours per week) expected to continue through May 2025. This position also includes a meal plan (5 meals per week on campus).

The Coordinator of Muslim Life reports directly to the University Chaplain. This position is not exempt from provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is eligible to earn overtime pay or compensatory time off for additional hours worked. This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include:

Takes initiative to meet regularly with Muslim students at Queens, understand their needs and provide support and guidance.
Provides leadership, guidance and support for students during the observance of Muslim holy days and seasons, including Friday prayers, Ramadan (including Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr) during the Muslim calendar.
Ensures reasonable dining accommodations for students during Ramadan and provides nurturing programs during Ramadan and other religiously significant dates.
Supports the leadership of Muslim Student Association, generating innovative programming opportunities for learning, enriching spiritual life, and service.
Supports Muslim students on campus, offering compassionate support as part of the Spiritual Life team.
Serves as a campus resource on Islam, through class visits, participation in campus events, and collaboration during interfaith programming.
Works closely with Admissions, connecting with prospective students and their families.
Creates opportunities to connect with the Muslim communities in Charlotte.
Generates social media opportunities to communicate/celebrate Muslim life at Queens.
Partners with the chaplain during Presbyterian and Pluralist week, bringing a diversity of learning opportunities to the Queens community in line with our goal of creating safe and brave spaces in which faculty, staff and students critically and openly engage with diverse religious, spiritual, and secular practices and traditions.
Works closely with the office of Diversity, Inclusion and Community Engagement to further expand and enhance collaboration in the realm of religious and spiritual diversity.

Non-Essential Duties:
Other duties and special projects may be assigned to meet department and University needs.

Qualifications:
Qualifications

Experience, Knowledge and Skills Required :

2-5 years of experience working with college age students.
Experience generating innovative and creative programming in building Muslim Life.
A commitment to the Muslim faith, a deep familiarity with the basic tenets of Islam, and a capacity to work with diverse Muslim students with a spirit of openness and inclusivity.
A commitment to interfaith engagement, and the building of bridged social capital across the Queens campus.
Experience facilitating events in celebration of Muslim holy days and seasons.
The ability to work in collaboration with Spiritual Life colleagues at Queens.
Basic unit in Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) or experience in offering care support for students.
Strong communication skills.
