Job Summary

Since 1789, the Office of the Clerk has served as the official record keeper of the U.S. House of Representatives, and proudly supports the nonpartisan legislative functions of the institution. The Clerk's Office of Art and Archives serves as custodian of the House's unique records and collections.

This full-time position provides support for the needs and functions of the objects in the Collection of the U.S. House of Representatives. Provides technical skills in registration, movement, exhibition, and general stewardship of the House Collection. Provides research and technical assistance on various special projects assigned to the Office of Art and Archives. Works in a fast-paced office environment with a small team, at an open work station, where noise levels are usually moderate. Grade level at the time of appointment is determined by experience and designated level of responsibility.

Major Duties
Assists in the care and documentation of collection objects, including duties such as inventory, object movement, exhibition preparation, and collections software data entry; Completes related administrative tasks such as coordinating deliveries to loading docks, arranging for internal/external services, filling reproduction and publication requests, and answering telephones;Assists in the research of the House Collection, as needed, and serves as a reference for curatorial questions; Understands and supports the services of the Office of Art and Archives, and the Office of the Clerk;Accepts performance-based criticism and direction, meets attendance requirements as established by the office, and works a flexible schedule including long hours, nights, and weekends when necessary;Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in art history, history, museum studies, or related field, and a minimum of two years' museum experience. Master's degree in related field preferred.

Demonstrated ability handling collections, fluidity with museum databases, detail-oriented and creative problem-solving skills, and temperament to communicate with a variety of clients in a professional manner.

Ability to perform the major duties described above.

Willingness and demonstrated capacity to learn new approaches. Ability to work as a member of a team performing shared duties. Strong research, writing, and communication skills. Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgement in fulfilment of responsibilities. Must be computer proficient and be able to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
