GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
The College Counselor provides college and career
counseling for grades 9-12. He/she will provide services to meet the needs of students (individually and
in group settings) and parents, and consult with teachers, staff and parents to enhance effectiveness in
supporting students' growth and success.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

A College Counselor is expected to have competencies in the following major areas:
I. COMMUNITY OF FAITH
A. Supports and implements the mission/philosophy of Catholic education and the school
B. Gives evidence of lived Gospel values
C. Participates in building faith community
II. INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS
A. Works cooperatively with administration
B. Works positively with colleagues, support staff, and parish staff
C. Demonstrates positive interpersonal relations with students
D. Maintains positive interpersonal relations with parents
III. PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
A. Assume responsibility for counseling students in grades 9 through 12 and their parents in regard to
the entire college selection, application, admission and financial aid processes
B. Coordinate the program and calendar of all standardized testing for students including scheduling
test dates, registering students, arranging for special prep sessions, administering the tests, and
providing pre- and post-test guidance
C. Guide students through the pre-registration process such that student course requests align with
student college goals
D. Assist with schedule changes to ensure continued alignment of course requests with college goals
E. Oversee and encourage placement of students in challenging summer programs such as but not
limited to internships, summer scholars, etc.
F. Develop extensive summary reports on students' progress on standardized testing to the school
community as appropriate
G. Conduct individual and group sessions in all areas of college counseling
H. Assist in writing school letters of recommendations for student college applications
I. Oversee the faculty writing of student letters of recommendations for college applications
J. Maintain and expand an attractive, informative and up-to-date College Counseling Center
K. Develop and teach college counseling courses
L. Oversee visits to colleges and from college representatives; act as a liaison between our students
and colleges
M. Assist students participating in Maryknoll's partnership with Hawaii Pacific University's
Associate of Arts/ Dual Credit Program and any other future partnerships
N. Represent the school at relevant state and national conferences and workshops
O. Serve as a participating member of NACAC and/or HACAC
P. Perform other duties as assigned
IV. PROFESSIONAL GROWTH
A. Interacts with colleagues to further professional growth
B. Takes advantage of opportunities for professional improvement

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree in counseling, education or in an applicable field of
study/education from an accredited college or university. Minimum of at least 3-5 years of
college counseling and/or college admission experience in a college-preparatory setting.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, talk, reach, sit,
hear, handle, and perform repetitive motions of the hands/wrists. An individual must be able to
stand and/or sit for extended periods. May need to climb stairs and lift, carry, push and/or pull
items up to 50 pounds. Must be able to respond effectively to and lead students in emergency
situations.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Work is usually performed in an office setting within the time frame established by the
supervisor. The employee is occasionally required to attend evening meetings and may oversee
field trips and other special events.

SUPERVISION
Exercises working supervision over students and volunteers, as necessary.
