Position Title: Hawaiian Language Lecturer at a Community College
Institution Overview: The University of Hawai'i is dedicated to enriching the educational experience of students through the teaching of Hawaiian language and cultural heritage.Key Responsibilities- Deliver instruction for designated courses within the Hawaiian language discipline.
- Hold a minimum of one office hour weekly for each course instructed.
- Facilitate learning by preparing course syllabi and assessing student progress through reports.
- Collaborate with the discipline coordinator and fellow instructors to enhance teaching methodologies.
- Participate in student and peer evaluations, along with self-assessment to improve teaching effectiveness.
- Uphold the principles and philosophy of community college education.
- Be available for evening and weekend classes, as well as teaching at various locations, including military bases and high schools, and through online platforms. Note that this position is not remote. Certain courses may only be available at military bases or online, requiring appropriate security clearances and background checks.
- A degree in the relevant field is required unless otherwise specified. Candidates not meeting the minimum qualifications may be considered under exceptional circumstances.
- Must possess functional native proficiency in both oral and written Hawaiian, along with the ability to communicate in English. Additionally, candidates should meet one of the following criteria: (a) Master's degree in Hawaiian (language or literature); (b) Master's degree in cultural studies or history related to Hawaiian speakers; (c) Master's degree in Linguistics, ESL, Education, or another language with at least 12 credits in advanced coursework related to second language methodology, Hawaiian literature, or culture; (d) Bachelor's degree in Hawaiian (language or literature) with three years of relevant experience; (e) Bachelor's degree in cultural studies or history related to Hawaiian speakers with three years of relevant experience; or (f) Bachelor's degree in Linguistics, ESL, Education, or another language with at least 12 credits in advanced coursework related to second language methodology, Hawaiian literature, or culture, along with three years of relevant experience.
- Experience teaching at the community college level.
- Proven ability to engage effectively with community college students.
- Relevant work experience in the subject area.
- Strong communication skills.
- Familiarity with competency-based instruction and behavioral objectives.
- Experience working with diverse student populations.
- Proficiency in utilizing technology to enhance instruction and support student success, including learning management systems and presentation software.
- Willingness to embrace new technological platforms.
