The Opportunity
Responsible for overseeing the day to day activities and supervision of a group of project accounting professionals. Responsible for performing advanced level accounting duties of assigned projects, such as revenue recognition, transactional accounting, complex invoicing. Typically responsible for analysis, forecasting, budgeting and reporting. Serves as trusted business advisor to management related to financial insight and performance. Provides resolution of complex and/or high-risk issues. Ensures the project is in compliance with contractual obligations, as appropriate. Works under minimal supervision.Key Responsibilities

Financial Analysis:

  • Directs research and responds to project related questions, including questions from management. Consolidates reporting for assigned business area. Provides ad hoc financial research and analysis to primary internal clients. Includes identifying areas of concern, proposing recommendations and implementing corrective action.

Financial Reporting:

  • Reviews assigned projects and/or business areas income statement for accuracy; reporting, analysis and variance explanation for projects; identifies and communicates financial risk & opportunities. Ensures staff completes monthly close process for assigned projects/business area in line with expectations. Advises on and ensures application of technical accounting guidance.

Budgeting & Forecasting:

  • Leads budget & forecast for assigned project portfolio or program. Develops and reviews financial models. Assists in development of financial targets. Identifies risk and opportunities to the plan. Provides oversight and review of financial inputs and metrics. Reviews work of team and advises staff throughout forecast process. Initiates strategic discussions with management based on anticipated results.
  • Analyzes project and/or business area budget & forecast; reports on key variances; conduct root cause analysis; offers suggestions/solutions to management.

Projects:

  • Reviews the structures of projects opened in their assigned business areas. Consults with subject matter experts as necessary to confirm that structure is appropriate.
  • Communicates financial information to management for assigned project(s) and/or business area(s). Identifies and communicates material variances, conducts root cause analysis, offers solutions. May present financial results during project reviews.
  • Acts as trusted business influencer to project team and/or business area, partners with project controls to manage project financial information, serves as finance point of contact. Shares insights with project/sector management. Helps drive strategic thinking for the business by providing recommendations for decision making.

Supervisory & Resource Management:

  • As a manager, provides direction to an assigned group. Typically oversees performance and workload management, career planning, recognition, learning and development. Aligns individual project accountant goals with that of department, sector and corporation. Identifies, evaluates, and addresses project accountant training needs to prepare for staff growth and development. Supports fluidity and movement of team's development across the finance organization. May participate in disciplinary actions, employee relations and workforce planning.
  • Identifies and assesses improvement opportunities which will add value. Champions continuous improvement efforts. Drives a consistent simplified solution for the project accounting organization. Assesses and supports the change management effects associated with the implementation of improvements. Proactively supports, encourages and facilitates staff to engage in continuous improvement activities.

Primary Internal Clients:

  • Primary internal clients are project accounting managers/BUDs/PALs, project managers, project controls, cost review board members, sector finance officer, corporate finance, financial planning & analysis. Increased visibility with sector leadership.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master Business Administration (MBA) or MS in Accounting
  • 10 years of related experience, preferably 4 years experience in project accounting
  • Experience in hiring and supervising professionals

Preferred Technical Skills:

  • Strong MS Excel, Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Access) Oracle, and BV Systems
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance, or equivalent experience
  • Typically 7+ years related experience
