Johnson & Johnson is recruiting a Director Occupational Safety. The Director Occupational Safety serves as a key member of the Environment Health & Safety (EH&S) organization.

This position will be located in US or Europe in one of our major MAKE sites.

SCOPE:

The scope of this role will support occupational safety within the different areas of the company operations, including manufacturing, warehousing, distribution, R&D, commercial, and offices. Occupational safety is the discipline of ensuring the safety of employees, contractors, customers, visitors, partners, etc. It involves identifying, assessing, and controlling the hazards and risks that may arise from the work environment, processes, equipment, materials, or activities. Occupational safety aims to prevent injuries and illness.

Specific areas of support include: machine safety, electrical safety, Lock-out/Tag Out/Try Out, Ergonomics, Contractor Safety, EH&S by Design, Human and Operational Performance (HoP), Accident/Incident investigation, Competency/Skill development, share lessons learned from incidents, etc. This list is non-exhaustive and as such a broad general knowledge on Occupational Safety is required.

KEY DUTIES:

The Director Occupational Safety leads a team of occupational safety matter experts (SME).
  • Lead the development of an Occupational Safety strategic plan, and tactical objectives in partnership with EH&S operations leaders and business partners that align with the organization's vision, mission, and values and aligned with the needs of the business.
  • Provide operational guidance and hands-on support to ensure efficient and effective execution. Regularly visits key locations and provides direct execution and training support.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness and performance of the Occupational Safety program, and report on Occupational Safety metrics and indicators to senior management and relevant stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable Occupational Safety laws, regulations, standards, and best practices, and keep abreast of changes and updates in the Occupational Safety field.
  • Establish and maintain Occupational Safety policies, procedures, and guidelines that reflect the organization's Occupational Safety goals and expectations.
  • Conduct regular Occupational Safety risk assessments and audits, and identify and prioritize areas for improvement and mitigation.
  • Provide Occupational Safety training, education, and awareness to staff and managers, and ensure that they have the necessary knowledge, skills, and competencies to perform their duties safely and effectively.
  • Oversee the investigation and reporting of Occupational Safety -related accidents, injuries, and incidents, and ensure that root causes are identified and corrective and preventive actions are implemented, followed up and shared across the organization.
  • Scout, test and scale of innovative technologies to support an injury free workplace.
  • Engage externally to benchmark and assure J&J stays at the forefront of innovative Occupational Safety solutions as well as to advance J&J's thought leadership and impact through collaborative partnerships.
  • Manage and supervise the Occupational Safety team, and provide them with leadership, direction, and support.
  • Manage the Occupational Safety budget and resources, and ensure that they are allocated and utilized efficiently and effectively.
  • Build and maintain positive and collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders, such as employees, managers, regulators, insurers, contractors, and suppliers, and represent the organization in Occupational Safety -related matters.
KEY RELATIONSHIPS:

The Director, Occupational Safety works with other EHS&S leaders, senior Commercial, R&D and Supply Chain leaders, and key internal partners such as Engineering and Property Services (E&PS), Employee Health and Wellness (EH&W) to promote a culture of safety across the organization.

The director will also interface with Occupational Safety regulatory agencies, professional associations and external experts in the EH&S field.

Qualifications

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent level of degree is required. Advanced degree in management and EHS/Engineering technical field preferred
  • Focus degree or training in Applied Science E.G. Electronics, Automation is preferred.
Required:
  • A minimum of 10 years of occupational safety leadership experience is required, preferable in a Pharma/Medical Device or other highly regulated industry.
  • Outstanding leadership; ability to gain trust and influence at all levels in a collaborative manner; act as a great business partner.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to influence behaviors and resolve challenge.
  • Demonstrated project management skills and good team skills in working with others at any level or responsibility.
  • Track record of strategic thinking and influencing in your part of the business.
  • This position may require a 30% of domestic and/or international travel.
The anticipated base pay range for this position is 142,000 to 244,950.

The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation's performance over a calendar/performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company's discretion on an individual basis.
  • Employees and/or eligible dependents may be eligible to participate in the following Company sponsored employee benefit programs: medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short- and long-term disability, business accident insurance, and group legal insurance.
  • Employees may be eligible to participate in the Company's consolidated retirement plan (pension) and savings plan (401(k)).
  • This position is eligible to participate in the Company's long-term incentive program.
  • Employees are eligible for the following time off benefits:- Vacation - up to 120 hours per calendar year
  • Sick time - up to 40 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Washington - up to 56 hours per calendar year
  • Holiday pay, including Floating Holidays - up to 13 days per calendar year of Work, Personal and Family Time - up to 40 hours per calendar year
