DIRECTOR PAYROLL


Birmingham, AL (No Remote)


The Director of Payroll is responsible for the strategic planning, direction, and management of the payroll department. This role ensures the accurate and timely processing of payroll, compliance with federal and state regulations, and implementation of best practices and technological advancements in payroll operations.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Management:

  • Lead and manage the payroll team, providing guidance, training, and development opportunities.
  • Foster a positive and collaborative work environment.
  • Set performance goals and conduct regular evaluations of staff performance.
  • Center of Excellence experience a plus

Payroll Processing:

  • Oversee the end-to-end payroll process, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll, wage, and hour laws and best practices.
  • Manage payroll-related activities such as garnishments, benefits deductions, taxes, and direct deposits.
  • Deep knowledge of Ceridian and Dayforce
  • Must have experience handling over 30,000 employees

Strategic Planning:

  • Develop and implement payroll strategies aligned with organizational goals.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
  • Stay informed of industry trends and changes in payroll legislation.
  • Past work in a large matrixed organization

Compliance and Reporting:

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
  • Prepare and submit accurate payroll reports and filings to relevant authorities.
  • Conduct regular audits of payroll procedures and records to ensure accuracy and compliance.

Technology and Systems:

  • Evaluate and implement payroll software and systems to streamline processes.
  • Collaborate with IT and other departments to integrate payroll systems with other business systems.
  • Ensure data integrity and security within payroll systems.
  • Workday experience

Budgeting and Financial Management:

  • Develop and manage the payroll department budget.
  • Analyze payroll data to provide insights and recommendations to senior management.
  • Ensure cost-effective management of payroll operations.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field. Advanced degree or professional certification (e.g., CPP) is a plus.
  • Experience: Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in payroll management, with at least 3-5 years in a leadership role.
  • Skills:
  • Strong knowledge of payroll processes, systems, and regulations.
  • Excellent leadership and team management skills.
  • Proficient in payroll software and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.

Work Environment:

The Director of Payroll typically works in an office environment. 4 days a week in the office. This role may require occasional travel to other company locations or for professional development.
