Director, Communications & Public Affairs

Washington, DC - hybrid schedule


We are looking for 10+ years of combined experience with a PR firm and a trade association. As a key member of the Communications team and reporting to senior leadership, identify, track, and communicate pertinent issues, events, and opportunities. Create, edit, and execute internal and external communication tactics and track related metrics. Target opportunities to amplify the organization as an industry thought leader and ensure that communications and public affairs align with the mission, goals, and objectives. Help develop and execute communications strategies and ensure that the organization’s brand is consistent, strong, and visible.


What you'll do

  • Identify and leverage communications tools and tactics to protect and promote the brand.
  • Research and leverage best practices to support and anticipate colleagues’ communications and storytelling needs.
  • Track, report, and present key performance metrics on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
  • Maintain relationships with national, international, and trade media.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to respond to media inquiries, coordinate interviews, and pitch news and events.
  • Track and report issues that impact the industry and help create and execute issues and reputation strategy.
  • Author high-quality content including social media, talking points, speeches, presentations, and fact sheets.
  • Ensure that websites are engaging and provide updates and recommendations for regular refinements.
  • Assess and drive strategy to increase engagement on social media platforms.
  • Supervise and mentor the department’s intern.
  • Handle other related duties as assigned.


What you'll need to succeed (requirements)

  • Bachelor's degree in communications or similar field and 10+ years of combined experience with a PR firm and a trade association.
  • Demonstrated experience and initiative with crisis and long and short-term strategic communications yielding positive results.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills with the ability to analyze and condense complex information.
  • Ability to interact with all levels of staff and outside parties.
  • Sound judgment, confidentiality, and excellent cross-cultural diplomacy skills.
  • Strong sense of accountability and follow through to produce high-quality work under multiple deadlines.
  • Excellent copy-editing skills and keen attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong organizational skills and time management.
  • Ability to build consensus and solidarity to achieve goals.
  • Advanced MS Office and online design software.
  • Flexibility for a hybrid office schedule and up to 25% annual travel.
