JOB DESCRIPTION

Tzunu Strategies is looking for a Director of Communications to join our team. The Director of Communications will be responsible for working closely with the Vice President of Communications in designing & executing communications strategies that shift the narrative, engage public policy and advance social change. We value proactive & collaborative staff who have knowledge of the communities of color in California and have the ability to adapt, learn and grow with a committed and passionate team.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

In close collaboration with the Vice President of Communications and firm leadership, the Director:

  • Works with a small team to oversee, execute, and ensure high quality and impactful deliverables.   
  • With the oversight of the VP, provides leadership in co-developing and ensuring appropriate implementation of firm wide communications priorities and practices   
  • Executes complex and varying communications deliverables and oversees other team members in executing deliverables.
  • Has a strong expertise and understanding of various communications strategies including but not limited to earned media, digital, messaging and narrative, and others. 
  • Develops and maintains relationships with reporters, media influencers, media outlets, and others. 
  • Manage policy and engagement priorities with a communications lens for various clients, particularly clients with a social impact and social justice focus.   
  • Manage media relations activities, including facilitating pitching and securing local, regional and national coverage for clients, convening press activations, coordinating press inquiries, and other responsibilities. 
  • Write and edit press releases, media advisories, and other essential materials
  • Keeps abreast of developments and trends within the communications field. 
  • Customizes communications plans for various accounts across the firm.
  • Develops external or public relations strategies & tactics to achieve client goals.
  • Attends meetings with clients as needed, reporting on deliverables. 
  • In collaboration with the VP, ensures team members are developing and nurturing reporter and media outlet relationships
  • Knowledge of creative asset/content development as well as social media engagement
  • Monitor and analyze communication metrics to ensure effectiveness of strategies


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of 7 years experience in communications or public relations
  • Demonstrated experience leading projects and cross-functional work groups.
  • Experience designing and implementing social impact communications campaigns or experience working with social justice organizations highly desired"
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Able to think strategically and provide creative solutions
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Experience in a public-facing capacity (i.e., sales, marketing, public relations, communications, community relations, corporate relations, advertising, or a related field)
  • Excellent communications  skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaborate with diverse constituencies within the firm and a diverse client portfolio
  • Strong writing, editing, proofreading, layout and design, professional printing/publishing skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge and proficiency with communications technologies
  • Understand principles of copywriting, graphic design, layout and publishing
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and social media marketing
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of current trends in digital media/social media
  • Graduation from a university or college with a major in public relations, marketing communication
