Minneapolis, United States MEDA - Metropolitan Economic Development Association Full time

We are looking for a dynamic Director of Development reporting to the COO. The Director of Development is responsible for oversight of all fund development, marketing, communications, and community relations at MEDA. This role is responsible for securing significant philanthropic support for priorities of MEDA by managing a dynamic portfolio of donors. You will work with the Executive Leadership Team (ELT) and the Board of Directors to develop and implement strategies across the organization to enhance our mission, build capacity and develop quality programs.


Essential Functions


Major Gifts Development: Portfolio Management: (50%)

  • Take timely and strategic steps in moving prospects through the major gift cycle of identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
  • Manage and lead specific fundraising projects pertaining to areas of focus (with a near term focus on the Access to Capital “ATC” campaign).
  • Build a portfolio of 100+ major gift prospects to ensure that timely steps are taken toward solicitation, closure, and stewardship. Performance expectations include: 15 solicitations per year at $50,000 or more; total annual gift production range from $3.5 million to $5 million. Work with the ELT and Board to set annual fundraising goals.
  • Identify new sources of funding and develop strategies to link donor and investor philanthropic and impact investment goals with MEDA’s programs.
  • Define and articulate a compelling case for support for Meda’s fundraising success. Partner with community members in a coordinated and systematic way to promote economic equity.
  • Develop an annual work plan with an emphasis on achieving established standards for the position.
  • Complete and file timely reports of donor/prospect contacts by utilizing database, employing discretion while recording information of relevance to appropriate individuals.
  • Develop fundraising goals to include general operating donations, individual giving, event sponsorships, foundation grants, government contracts and donated in-kind professional services.

Advancement Team Management (30%)

  • Lead by example and provide the necessary resources to achieve the MEDA’s DEI goals.
  • Lead the development of government proposals and applications.
  • Manage all marketing activities and public relations activities for the organization.
  • Develop and manage the budget for the Advancement Team.
  • Set benchmarks and provide periodic reports of giving initiatives and accomplishments.
  • Manage MEDA’s external presence through participation in relevant community activities, partnership opportunities, and networking.
  • This position requires some weekend and evening attendance at various fundraising and external functions, and occasional travel.

Financial Oversight

  • Oversee the preparation and delivery of financial reports and projections to the President/CEO, Board, staff, investors, and auditors.
  • Oversee the preparation of department budgets and department/region expense reports
  • Analyze and interpret financial results and trends
  • Oversee cash forecasting and management, oversee annual budgeting and audit processes
  • Ensure financial controls, policies, and procedures are in place and updated
  • Ensure effective management of relationships with financial institutions, investment advisors and other vendors.
  • Serve as a key liaison to the Board for all advancement matters and participate in monthly Board and Committee (Advancement & Marketing) meetings.

Development Partnerships and Stewardship (20%)

  • Staff liaison with the Marketing and Fund Development Committee.
  • Work closely with the ELT, Board and the Advancement team to identify priorities and opportunities for new major gifts.
  • Develop and maintain on-going relationships with donors and investors who have the capacity to make major philanthropic gifts and/or impact investments - including program related investments (PRIs), mission related investments (MRIs), and other types of program capitalization and support.
  • Represent Meda to external constituents in a positive and compelling manner.
  • Collaborate with ELT, and community-wide development colleagues on donor strategies.
  • Work with MEDA colleagues to appropriately steward scholarship, fellowship and corporate/foundation gifts, ensuring gifts are utilized in line with donors’ intentions.
  • Provide primary responsibility for development activities that bring donors, BIPOC entrepreneurs and community leaders together.
  • Represent Meda within the community by attending and actively participating in appropriate internal and external functions and events and professional organizations.

Qualifications Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 10 years of demonstrated ability to successfully solicit major gifts; or experience in marketing, sales, public relations, financial advisement or related fields with emphasis on relationship development and solicitation of individuals or organizations.
  • Solid relationship-building skills with a diverse constituency of donors and strategic partners.
  • Outstanding oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience and commitment to advancing economic diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace with individuals with diverse identities and underrepresented groups.
  • Familiarity with marketing and social media; previous experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated excellence in management with the ability to coach staff at all levels.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and maintain confidentiality.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in interacting with high-profile individuals from public, private and nonprofit organizations.
  • Requires excellent communication skills - ability to represent Meda to a broad constituency, and ability to write and present clearly and persuasively in both in-person and virtual settings.
  • Requires proficiency in Microsoft Office, customer relationship management system / donor database, and willingness to learn new technology skills.
  • Experience in executing a strategic vision, leading a detailed implementation plan, actively coordinating with other Meda staff, prioritizing work, and ensuring timelines are met.
  • Must be relationship-focused, detail-oriented, with an emphasis on quality and timely follow up.

Preferred:

  • Advanced degree
  • Demonstrated experience in cultivating and maintaining strategically important relationships (individual, institutional, corporate, etc.)
  • Demonstrated experience in raising program-related or organization-wide community and impact investments (e.g. from philanthropic foundations, banks and financial institutions, family offices, or other institutional or corporate organizations).
  • Corporate experience, or experience in public relations, marketing or communications helpful.
  • Previous development experience
