Payroll Specialist

Job Overview:
We are looking for a skilled and self-sufficient Payroll Specialist to manage the entire payroll function for our organization. This role is ideal for an individual with advanced Canadian payroll experience who thrives in an autonomous work environment. You will be responsible for all aspects of payroll processing, including handling complex payroll tax matters and ensuring compliance with multi-jurisdictional regulations. Strong Excel skills and critical thinking abilities are essential for success in this role.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee and execute the full payroll cycle, ensuring accurate and timely processing of payroll for both hourly and salaried employees.
- Manage Canadian payroll, including daily rates, hourly rates, salaries, and allowances, while navigating multi-jurisdictional rules and regulations.
- Set up and maintain payroll tax accounts, and handle all aspects of payroll tax compliance, including researching and responding to agency notices.
- Utilize advanced Excel functions (e.g., VLOOKUP, Pivot Tables) for data analysis and reporting.
- Maintain thorough knowledge of tax regulations and accounting principles as they apply to payroll.
- Perform data entry and auditing tasks with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Actively research and stay informed about changes in payroll regulations to ensure compliance.
- Demonstrate strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to addressing payroll issues and maintaining compliance.
- Meet payroll deadlines consistently and demonstrate reliability in a minimally supervised role.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, Tax, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum of 5 years of full-cycle payroll experience, with a strong emphasis on Canadian payroll.
- At least 3 years of experience handling multi-jurisdictional payroll processing.
- Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) certification preferred, but not required.
- Experience with ADP Workforce Now or similar payroll systems is preferred, but not mandatory.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including advanced functions such as VLOOKUP and Pivot Tables.
- Strong understanding of tax regulations and payroll accounting principles.
- Knowledge of electronic data processing as it relates to payroll activities.
- Exceptional critical thinking skills, self-motivation, and the ability to work independently.
