Primary Purpose:

A Network Specialist is a professional responsible for the design, implementation, maintenance, and security of an organization's computer networks. Their primary focus is to ensure that the network infrastructure operates efficiently and securely to meet the organization's needs. Reports to the Network Administrator.


Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

• Associates in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent work experience)

• Professional certifications such as Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), CompTIA Network+, or Juniper Networks Certified Internet Associate (JNCIA) preferred


Special Knowledge/Skills:

• Working knowledge of networking concepts, protocols, and technologies (e.g., TCP/IP, VLANs, VPNs, routing protocols).

• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.


Experience:

• 1-3 years of experience in network administration or engineering roles

• Experience with network hardware and software from vendors such as Cisco, Juniper, Palo Alto Networks, etc.


Major Responsibilities and Duties:

1. Designing and planning network infrastructure based on organizational requirements, scalability, and future growth.

2. Selecting appropriate network technologies and protocols to meet business objectives.

3. Creating network diagrams, documentation, and proposals for network upgrades or expansions.

4. Installing, configuring, and deploying network hardware and software components such as routers, switches, firewalls, and wireless access points.

5. Setting up network connections and ensuring proper integration with existing systems.

6. Testing and troubleshooting network configurations to ensure reliability and performance.

7. Monitoring network performance, traffic, and security incidents.

8. Performing regular maintenance tasks such as software updates, patches, and firmware upgrades.

9. Conducting periodic audits and assessments to identify potential vulnerabilities or areas for improvement.

10. Implementing security measures to protect the network from unauthorized access, malware, and other cyber threats.

11. Configuring firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems, VPNs, and other security appliances.

12. Conducting security audits and penetration testing to identify and mitigate security risks.

13. Responding to network-related issues and service outages in a timely manner.

14. Diagnosing and resolving network connectivity, performance, and configuration issues.

15. Providing technical support and guidance to end-users and other IT staff as needed.

16. Maintaining accurate documentation of network configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting guides.

17. Providing training to IT personnel and end-users on network-related topics and best practices.


Supervisory Responsibilities:

None.

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripherals; Professional tool kit provided

Posture: Prolonged sitting; occasional bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting

Motion: Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching; intermediate amount of walking

Lifting: Occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds)

Environment: May work prolonged or irregular hours; Local travel to campuses

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
