Position Overview

The Finance Director plays a critical role in maintaining the financial integrity and sustainability of the Georgia Conservancy. Reporting directly to the President and COO, the Finance Director is responsible for overseeing all financial activities of the organization. This includes ensuring accurate and timely accounting, financial reporting, and compliance with regulations. The Finance Director will supervise a bookkeeper and work closely with the COO and development team. Additionally, they will prepare financial reports for the President and Board of Trustees and collaborate closely with the Finance Committee of the Board.


Responsibilities

Financial Management

  • Oversee all accounting functions, including processing/reviewing expenditures, payables and receivables, monthly fees, and general ledger entries.
  • Ensure timely account and general ledger reconciliations and financial statement reporting.
  • Manage cash flow to ensure adequate funds to cover obligations.
  • Supervise accounts/grants payable, donations, and other accounts receivable.
  • Develop and maintain strong internal controls and risk management practices.
  • Plan for and manage annual audits, including preparation of schedules and information for auditors.
  • Ensure completion of all financial reporting required by federal, state, or local regulations (e.g., Form 990, 1099’s).


Budgeting and Financial Planning

  • Develop and manage the organization’s budget in collaboration with the COO.
  • Monitor and report on financial performance against the budget.
  • Provide financial analysis and forecasting to support strategic planning and decision-making.


Financial Reporting

  • Prepare and present financial reports to the President, COO, and Board of Trustees.
  • Work closely with the Finance Committee of the Board to set meeting agendas, create meeting packets, and ensure accurate meeting minutes.
  • Ensure transparency and accuracy in financial reporting to all stakeholders.


Collaboration and Supervision

  • Supervise a bookkeeper, providing guidance and oversight to ensure accurate and timely completion of tasks.
  • Work closely with the COO and development team on financial matters related to fundraising and grant management.
  • Foster a collaborative working environment and provide support to team members as needed.


Compliance and Risk Management

  • Ensure compliance with all financial regulations and standards.
  • Identify and mitigate financial risks to the organization.


Qualifications

Required Experience and Education

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration with an accounting concentration. A graduate degree is a plus.
  • CPA highly preferred but not required.
  • Minimum of 7 years of accounting experience, in the nonprofit sector.
  • Proficiency in GAAP and knowledge of FASB and IRS regulations as they apply to nonprofit organizations.
  • Excellent computer skills, particularly in accounting software, MS Word, Excel, and Outlook. Experience with fund accounting systems is a plus.
