Job Description and Duties

Would you like to work outdoors as part of a team making a hands-on, tangible contribution to the conservation of California's reptile, amphibian, and fish? The Department of Fish and Wildlife's Invasive Species Program is seeking a contentious team player to work as a Scientific Aid to work at field sites in Roseville, Folsom, and throughout the state to remove non-native watersnakes and survey for New Zealand Mudsnails.

Und ether the general supervision of the Environmental Program Manager, and lead of the Project lead Environmental Scientist, teams of Scientific Aids will deploy snake traps, check traps daily, remove and identifying captured animals, occasional participate in hand-capture efforts, transport live snakes, and retrieve, clean, and repair snake traps.

In addition, teams will travel throughout the state to survey waterbodies for the presence of New Zealand mudsnails, and collect surrounding environmental data.

The Fish and Wildlife Scientific Aid classification is a non-testing classification.

You will find additional information about the job in the
Duty Statement.

Working Conditions
Incumbents must wear a uniform shirt, and must handle non-venomous snakes. Traps must be checked daily, therefore daily hours vary and working weekends and holidays is required. Travel in a personal vehicle between Roseville and Folsom field sites is required. Overnight travel in state vehicles or rental cars is required for New Zealand mudsnail surveys. Work is conducted almost entirely outdoors, and occasionally in extreme weather conditions including temperatures exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Worksites include urban wetland/marsh habitat, vegetated creek and streambeds, drainages, golf course waterways/natural areas, and public accessible day-use areas. The environmental conditions vary from shallow to waist-deep water, which are typically stagnant and surrounded by dense, overgrown vegetation. Terrain is vegetated and uneven. Some sites are remote with no cell phone reception.

Chest waders are required in all waterbodies and some require the use of a personal flotation device (life jacket) and float tube for access.
