Job Summary:


As a Research Specialist, this individual will be part of the UW-Madison Department of Medicine and a member of a vibrant research endeavor focused on identifying new ways to prevent or treat diabetes using mouse and cell models.

The individual will be a member of a collaborative, congenial team including undergraduate students, graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, and scientists.

The laboratory is located in the VA Hospital in newly remodeled space with state-of-the-art equipment.

The candidate will have the opportunity to be involved in all research projects in the lab, facilitating the success of students, interns, and other lab staff, and will accelerate the productivity of the group as a whole by effective and efficient laboratory management.


Responsibilities:


Develops, designs, and conducts one or more research projects and organizes daily operation of projects and specialized research areas to ensure work meets established objectives under moderate supervision.


  • 50% Conducts research experiments according to established research protocols with moderate impact to the project(s). Collects data and monitors test results
  • 10% Operates, cleans, and maintains organization of research equipment and research area. Tracks inventory levels and places replenishment orders
  • 10% Reviews, analyzes, and interprets data and/or documents results for presentations and/or reporting to internal and external audiences
  • 10% Participates in the development, interpretation, and implementation of research methodology and materials
  • 15% Provides operational guidance on day-to-day activities of unit or program staff and/or student workers
  • 5% Performs literature reviews and writes reports

Education:

Bachelor's Degree

Preferred focus in biological or biomedical sciences.

Qualifications:

  • Word processing and database/spreadsheet software familiarity required.
  • Work experience as a technician in a biomedical research laboratory required. Significant undergraduate or research intern research experience is also acceptable.
  • Experience with molecular biology and mouse handling is highly desirable.
