The Continuous Improvement (CI) Leader has a crucial role in fostering a sustainable culture of employee engagement in continuous improvement. This position acts as a catalyst to enhance plant performance and achieve significant results.

The CI Leader is an integral part of the site leadership team and oversees operational excellence and world-class manufacturing activities.

This position collaborates closely with divisional and site leadership to develop and implement productivity strategies, ensuring that CI initiatives are in line with business objectives focusing on Safety, Quality, Cost, Service, and People.

To excel in this role, a leader is needed who can effectively steer change in a rapidly evolving manufacturing environment by leveraging continuous improvement methodologies and tools.

Key responsibilities include identifying/prioritizing improvement activities, monitoring financial progress, and providing guidance to project leaders and teams. The ability to inspire and lead others is essential.
This position will be located in Aurora, IL and may involve occasional travel.

Specific Responsibilities Include:
  • Collaborate with divisional and site leaders to ensure CI priorities align with the overall business strategy and objectives.
  • Utilize a zero-loss mindset to identify and prioritize areas for enhancement.
  • Create value by leading and facilitating the focused execution of CI projects.
  • Manage the pipeline of improvement projects, prioritize them, and allocate resources accordingly.
  • Enhance the skills of others through coaching and mentoring project leaders and teams.
  • Support the implementation of enterprise initiatives such as Daily Management System, Problem-Solving Practices, and Reliability Excellence.
  • Conduct regular progress reviews of CI projects with Finance, project leaders, site, and divisional management.
  • Track and report results, including cost savings.
  • Share best practices internally and externally.
  • Support the enterprise Learning & Development Framework in collaboration with the Operations and L&D team by managing technical floor trainers on a daily basis.

How You Will Impact WestRock:

The CI Leader is accountable for enhancing key performance indicators (KPIs) by effectively implementing systems, tools, and processes. They are the primary trainer & coach for WestRock's Manufacturing Excellence systems & tools, supporting the system's health and driving CI projects to achieve plant savings targets.

What You Need to Succeed:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in a technical field is preferred, though not mandatory.
  • Black or Green Belt certification (or to be obtained within the first year of employment) along with experience in operational excellence tools like Daily Management System, Reliability, Asset Utilization, and various problem-solving practices.
  • Experience: Proficiency in leading process improvement projects in a dynamic environment using team-centered analytical CI methodologies (lean, six sigma, etc.) with proven outcomes.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a manufacturing setting with progressive responsibilities. Knowledge in paper and packaging is advantageous.
  • Experience in supporting learning and training teams to guarantee the delivery of technical capabilities & a CI mindset to the floor.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills across all levels, from shop floor to executive level.
  • Strong ability to influence and persuade others positively.
  • Drive and enthusiasm to enhance systems and processes.
  • Proven capability to coach, teach, and mentor others to drive business outcomes.
  • Financial acumen with the ability to develop financial models for project support and tracking to ascertain net productivity value on the P&L.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, Minitab, SmartSheet, SharePoint, and Visio.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
