Key Responsibilities of the Charge Nurse
  • Distribute workflow within the department, delegating and prioritizing tasks for nursing staff based on their training levels and client needs. Develop and manage shift schedules.
  • Organize and facilitate staff meetings.
  • Coordinate client care and ensure the effective implementation of treatment plans by nursing personnel.

  • Evaluate clients' behaviors and conditions to update care plans, informing physicians of any changes in status or medication.
  • Monitor client care plans and assess client conditions, identifying potential issues that could lead to complications for clients or staff, guiding nursing staff on appropriate actions.
  • Review client records and audit medical charts, ensuring compliance with contractual and regulatory standards.
  • Train, develop, and evaluate nursing staff performance, participating in staff evaluation processes.
  • Provide input on individual employee evaluations, recommend competency assessments, and advise on training needs for nursing staff.
  • Utilize various educational methods, including peer consultation, mentorship, and in-service programs, to enhance staff knowledge.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of procedures related to client care, assisting in establishing criteria for quality improvement.
  • Provide education to patients and families, explaining discharge instructions and distributing relevant information.
  • Oversee medical equipment and inventory, initiating repairs and ordering necessary supplies and medications.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned, with a focus on delivering direct client care.
Qualifications
  • An associate degree is required; a Bachelor's degree in Nursing or a related field is preferred.
  • Current Registered Nurse license as mandated by state regulations.
  • Three to five years of progressively responsible nursing experience, including supervisory roles and at least one year in psychiatric or substance abuse settings.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • In-depth understanding of nursing theories, principles, and practices to effectively plan, evaluate, and manage nursing programs.
  • Familiarity with JCAHO requirements and standards.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational abilities.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to quickly assess client conditions accurately.
  • Capacity to manage emergencies and maintain composure in high-pressure situations.
  • A compassionate and empathetic approach to patient care.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
  • Ability to speak effectively to conduct training sessions and communicate with others.
  • Ability to record and proofread necessary information and documentation.
  • Ability to respond to telephones and pages, and to hear spoken communication.
