Communications and Outreach Department – Washington State Bar Association (WSBA)

The WSBA's mission is to serve the public and the members of the Bar, to ensure the integrity of the legal profession, and to champion justice.

Purpose and Position Summary:

A Graphic Designer at WSBA uses a combination of artistic, perceptual, and creative skills to provide visualization and production of communication solutions that include publications, artwork, and materials for print, digital, and online access, as well as other tangible exhibits and presentations for WSBA members and the public. With the aid of computer applications, the Graphic Designer uses design and production elements to convey communication objectives with the desired impact. Working within the Publications and Design Services team this role provides design solutions for and collaborates with other WSBA departments, the Board of Governors, and other related Boards.

Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities:

WSBA Graphic Design services:

  • Creates and generates creative solutions to graphic communication projects to engage and inspire members and the public. Works with Graphic Design Manager to set project priorities and timelines.
  • Designs layouts and final artwork for reports, brochures, infographics, graphic impact sheets, flyers, print ads, direct mail, posters, banners, signage, PowerPoint presentations as well as logos and type treatments, photo compositions, and other visual materials per requirements provided by internal colleagues or external stakeholders, to communicate programs and initiatives efficiently and compellingly to members and the public.
  • Works with the Graphic Designer, who has ultimate responsibility for Washington State Bar News magazine, as needed.
  • Art directs projects with refined visual style using photography, typography, color, and graphic elements to draw attention to and enhance communication messages, in a contemporary manner, that attract, engage, and inform the members and the public. The Graphic Designer utilizes ongoing photo research and design trends to provide WSBA with up-to-date visual stylizations.
  • Analyzes, reviews, edits, and redesigns WSBA print media to stay current and relevant in order to increase value for the members, the public, and the organization.
  • Produces final ready-to-publish files using design software including InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat, and PowerPoint. Maintains file organization and version status. Understands printing processes and technology requirements for proper file preparation and works with printers and vendors to achieve peak quality output to establish the highest degree of sophistication in print, digital, and environmental graphic communication.
  • Schedules workload to provide time-sensitive solutions to assignments from quick-turnaround template-based production art to long-term projects and campaigns in order to facilitate efficiency, economy, and synergy between stakeholders and outside vendors.
  • Constructs and assembles artwork, comps, visualizations, and models of design concepts in order to present and test solutions for colleagues and provide the best solutions for the organization.

Education Required:
  • Related Associate's/bachelor's degree in graphic design or equivalent combination of experience or training in graphic design.
Education Preferred:
  • Coursework in graphic design and art.
  • Coursework in humanities and/or liberal arts.
Experience Required:
  • A minimum of three years of proven graphic-design experience in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment.
  • High level of expertise in standard design software and programs such as InDesign, Illustrator , and Photoshop.
  • Proficiency in creating design solutions in Canva.
Experience Preferred:
  • Experience producing design solutions for institutional communications, including marketing, advertising, and promotion.
  • Experience working within branding and visual identity constraints.
Competencies (Skills/Abilities) Required:
  • Outstanding graphic design and publication-layout skills with a refined sense of style and high degree of visual literacy.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Production skills including facility with typography, layout, photo editing, and file prep.
  • Extreme attention to detail and organization.
  • The ability to collaborate with others, work with minimal supervision, and take responsibility for his/her work.
  • Ability to stay current with industry trends and tools.
  • Time management skills to work competently with competing deadlines, and prioritize additional daily commitments.

  • Expertise in graphics software applications:
    1. Adobe InDesign and skill to produce multi-page documents for print and digital presentation.
    2. Adobe Illustrator and the ability to create and edit logos, design icons and graphic illustration and design infographics in a vector-based application.
    3. Adobe Photoshop skills and know-how to work with images in a pixel-based application:
    4. Crop, extend, and enhance photos, including routine cleanup and retouching.
    5. Adjust levels, colors, and contrast, with skills in photo compositing.
    6. Adobe Acrobat and the skill to produce interactive forms and verify hyperlinks in documents.
    7. Competence in MS Office applications, and Windows operating system(s).
    8. Know-how to enhance documents graphically in Word.
    9. Capacity to work with Excel worksheets and extract data for presentations.
    10. Ability to create graphics for use in PowerPoint and create slide shows as needed.
    11. Routine skills in Outlook.
    12. File management and competence to store and organize files on the server.

Working Conditions:

This position, while primarily remote, must be flexible to work in office or travel within WA state as deemed necessary, or as required. This position may also have the option to work in-office. For remote work, must have an adequate home/work environment and internet access, for performing work of a highly sensitive and confidential nature.

Employment with the Washington State Bar Association mandates that WSBA Staff must reside within the State of Washington at the time of hire, and during active employment status.

The essential functions of the job that must be performed, with or without a reasonable accommodation: This position must be able to regularly work five days per week in an office type environment (remote or in office), possess the ability to primarily sit/stand and use a computer, and lift/push/pull items weighing up to 25 pounds.
