The Storyteller and Communications Associate is chief storyteller for the only Jewish day school in the Nation's Capital and executes comprehensive communications efforts for diverse constituencies within a vibrant PK-8 school community.

The Storyteller and Communications Associate is responsible for creating engaging content for a variety of channels and audiences, including prospective families, current families, alumni, and the broader MILTON community.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Create compelling news and magazine articles, website copy, community messages, social media updates, and other written materials that effectively communicate the School's mission and values to a range of audiences.
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive communications calendar that maps out content production and distribution strategies across various channels.
  • Develop strong relationships with faculty and staff across the school to generate ideas and collaborate on story development.
  • Serve as an active and engaged member of the External Relations team (Advancement and Admissions) to ensure alignment in messaging and storytelling across the school.
  • Collaborate in concept development and write scripts for video content for use by the Admissions and Advancement teams.
  • Work with external vendors as needed to support content production, including videographers, designers, and photographers.
  • Partner with the Development team to create engaging content for fundraising collateral.
  • Partner with the Website and Data Manager and others to maintain up to date and accurate content for the School's website, including:
  • Adding/removing/editing pages on the public website and internal parent portal
  • Supporting faculty, parents, and the community on use of the website tools
  • Updating resource board on the internal parent portal
  • Serve as school photographer for everyday activities, assemblies, and events. Liaise with professional photographers as needed for larger events (graduation, Purim Ball, etc). Manage photo and video assets in an organized and accessible manner.
  • In partnership with Advancement colleagues, support efforts to build a comprehensive engagement strategy for parents of alumni and alumni.
  • Ensure all content is accurate, wellwritten, and aligned with the School's values and mission.
  • Support school events such as open houses, community events, and alumni events and produce brochures and collateral materials as needed. Participate in and attend school events which may fall on evenings and Sundays.
  • Step in to support other areas of school as necessary, including taking on at least one school duty a week. As a small school, we pitch in where and when needed, whether to take on new tasks or to support a temporary need.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • A skilled storyteller with excellent writing and editing skills and strong attention to detail
  • Strong project manager, with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, meet deadlines, and stay organized in a fastpaced environment
  • Knowledge of Jewish practice and customs strongly recommended
  • A creative problem solver with a collaborative spirit and the ability to handle challenging situations diplomatically
  • Ability to exercise confidentiality, act with discretion, and maintain composure under pressure
  • Experience in graphic design and skills in publication development and direction a plus
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, Microsoft Office Suite, Google Drive, basic HTML, social media platforms, video editing, and web publishing
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, a sense of humor, and the ability to relate to diverse constituencies including students, parents, faculty, donors, and volunteers
  • Availability to periodically work outside of the normal schedule for early morning meetings, evening engagements, and occasional weekend obligations
