The Product Designer is responsible for developing accurate and complete solid and/or surfaced models of new product concepts. In addition, this position will optimize and merge the design requirements and its production method with minimal direction of an engineer.

Responsibilities
  • Act as a technical expert to develop new product concepts using the SolidWorks CAD system or other CAD software based on concepts, sketches, or interactions under limited direction of an engineer.
  • Optimize the design of new products for its manufacturing and assembly process by merging the design requirements and its production method.
  • Conceptualize ideas into functional, working models based on best principles of mechanical design, manufacturing and user interaction. 3D models to be designed for manufacture in the areas of injection molding, stamping, forging, die cast, and blow molding using standard design principals and practices.
  • Utilize knowledge of component and assembly design and fabrication to revise 3D models of product concepts.
  • Create complex 3D technical models from translated surface, imported solids or Industrial Design with limited direction of an engineer.
  • Recommend appropriate tolerances on components based on stack-up analysis and manufacturing input with approval of an engineer.
  • Work to minimize any design detail that may cause extra steps and add cost in the manufacturing process.
  • Mentor CAD Designers and Drafters as needed.
  • Assist in development and maintenance of 3D design standards including model structure in SolidWorks.
  • Prioritize work to align with the goals of the department and various project teams.
  • Review personal progress within projects on a consistent basis and work to maintain time-lines.
  • Seek out and demand accurate inputs and produce only quality work product for your downstream customers.
  • Prepare Engineering Change Order (ECO) documentation that is accurate and complete under the limited direction and approval of an engineer per the corporate procedures.
  • Maintain close contact with associated engineering groups and project teams.
  • Perform other duties as required within the nature and level of work.
Qualifications

Associate of Applied Science Degree in Computer Drafting and Design or equivalent experience and (7) years of direct CAD design experience with SolidWorks CAD software or equivalent 3D modeling software are required. Experience creating detailed engineering drawings and 3D solid and surface models based on concepts, sketches with limited direction from an engineer is required. Experience working with high volume consumer products using the manufacturing processes of injection molding, stamping, die casting, forging and blow molding is preferred. Knowledge including material properties, mold design, sliding cores, complex parting line definition and draft strategy is also preferred.

Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, and Outlook). Ability to generate high quality models that conform to our visual brand guidelines. Ability to adapt and function in an environment of changing priorities often under tight time constraints. Must have strong organizational skills, attention to detail, machine shop practices and processes, and good drafting practices and standards. Must have strong communications skills, verbal and written. Strong team focus and ability to work with others, both internal and external to the organization. Ability to work with and take direction from the engineering staff.

Physical Requirements

Occasionally required to stand, walk or sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
