JOB SUMMARY:

Under minimal supervision, acts as a senior engineer handling engineering tasks. Provides engineering support in developing project plans, designs, and traffic engineering studies. Offers field experience with traffic signals and ITS hardware, along with preparing cost estimates and technical reports for transportation projects. Additionally, provides training, support, and knowledge sharing to fellow engineers.

JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES:

This role is part of the Roadway Policy Group within the Office of Design Policy and Support. Responsibilities include services related to roadway geometrics, roadside design, design policy, multimodal design, ADA compliance, performance-based design, and more. The position involves supporting project delivery and ensuring compliance with AASHTO guidance manuals and federal/state regulations. Tasks also encompass providing instruction, staying updated on industry practices, and serving as a subject matter expert for engineering studies and design.

Specific responsibilities may include:
  • Updating the GDOT Design Policy Manual to align with industry standards and best practices.
  • Reviewing and overseeing design exceptions and variances, as well as responding to design policy inquiries.
  • Ensuring that GDOT's roadside design policies adhere to best practices.
  • Developing construction standards and details that meet the requirements of maintenance and construction projects.
  • Monitoring national research for its applicability to design policies and attending relevant professional events.
  • Coordinating and reviewing design-related policies from other departments.
  • Providing guidance on policy implementation and representing the Department at meetings.
  • Assisting with addressing complaints regarding roadway geometrics and roadside design.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate must meet the minimum qualifications, including State Entry Qualifications and Agency Specific Qualifications.

STATE ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or civil engineering and technology.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) License required.
AGENCY SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Four or more years of experience in highway/transportation engineering.
  • Advanced knowledge of project design.
  • Understanding of engineering standards and guidelines.
  • Familiarity with the Department's programs and plan development processes.
  • Ability to analyze and solve complex design problems effectively.
  • Proficiency in preparing clear and organized written reports.
  • Experience in implementing Quality Controls and performing Quality Assurance checks.
  • Strong oral communication skills and professionalism.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Six or more years of experience in highway/transportation engineering.
  • Advanced understanding of engineering standards and guidelines.
  • Ability to work independently and identify innovative solutions.
  • Experience in training and leading design teams.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in project management.
  • Effective negotiation skills with internal and external stakeholders.
