Union Tank Car Company is seeking a 2nd & 3rd shift Quality Assurance Inspector, reporting to the Quality Assurance Manager, at our full-service rail tank car repair shop in Valdosta, GA.

Job Summary:
This position is responsible for the inspection, researching, evaluation, and estimation of repairs in addition to the proper coding of and preparation of Billing Repair Card estimates & documentation required to maintain company, lessee, and customer fleets

Job Responsibilities:
This is a general description of the essential functions of this job. This is not an exhaustive list and employees in these classifications frequently may be required to perform additional duties. Not all classifications will be required to perform all job functions.

Inspects all incoming material, fabricated parts, machined items and rejects those which do not conform to requirements using the applicable inspection method.

They mark parts as accepted or rejected. They prepare records and reports for management.

They may also inspect the interior of the car to determine what repairs are needed to the tank hopper car and/or any existing coating.

They may also inspect the coating or coating repair that was done to the car to ensure that the coating meets specifications.

The incumbent identifies both defective materials and poor workmanship through the use of drawings, engineering standards, and codes. They may stop the repair process and advise the appropriate level of management. They may also do the final inspection of the repairs before the car is shipped to the customer.

On occasion, the incumbent will perform a joint inspection with vendors or customer representatives to reach mutual agreements concerning the conformance or non-conformance to requirements.

Maintains work area in a neat and orderly manner and reports potential hazards.

Knowledge and Skills:
This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent.
Three (3) years of railroad repair experience preferred.
Detailed knowledge of inspection procedures, tank car construction and FRA and AAR rules and regulations.
Knowledge and familiarity with NDT processes is preferred.
Additional training in inspection processes will be required.

In addition, this position requires a working knowledge of computers, including familiarity with the AS400, and Outlook, various customer systems and Microsoft Office software packages.

Possess reading and comprehension skills associated with Fleet Repair Standards, Governing Regulations, drawings, and catalogs.
General mechanical aptitude and ability to use railroad gauges, testing techniques, & test equipment necessary for rail car inspections.
Have vision correctable to 20/20 for inspection activities.

Working Conditions:
Average care required avoiding injury while handling or positioning material.

Climb ladders to heights of approximately 14 feet, bend, crawl, stoop, squat, kneel, and stretch to perform tank car inspections.

Enter tank cars via a manway opening approximately 20 inches in diameter.
Be able to tolerate heights, confined spaces, & working through periods of inclement weather.

Be willing and able to wear safety equipment such as safety shoes, hard hats, air fed respirators, body harnesses, and safety glasses.
