The Israel and Judaica Section, Asian and Middle Eastern Division, is offering an opportunity for a qualified individual at the GS-09 level to serve on a full-time, 120-day temporary promotion to the GS-11 level, OR a qualified individual at the GS-11 level (no promotion) to serve on a full-time 120-day detail as a hybrid acquisition and cataloging librarian in the ASME Division Israel and Judaica Section.

Reporting to the ASME Division Israel and Judaica Section Head, this position is responsible for analog and digital acquisitions and copy and original cataloging. The successful candidate will gain excellent work experience working with Israel and Judaica Section staff, contractors, and volunteers who process library materials in all subjects and formats in Armenian, Georgian, Hebrew, Yiddish, and Russian languages.

Responsibilities:

The hybrid librarian responsibilities cover the acquisitions and cataloging of Hebraica monographs and serials. Acquisitions tasks include searching for records in Voyager and OCLC, creation of initial bibliographic control records; searching for open access serials and harvesting possibilities, communicating with the Recommending Officer regarding acquisitions decisions, MARS requests, communication with vendors regarding a variety of matters, checking packing slips against shipments to ensure that all materials have been received; the processing and payment of invoices, including inputting multiple line items in the Acquisitions Module for each serials invoice. Cataloging tasks includes full cataloging: descriptive (including authority work), subject, classification (A-Z across the Library of Congress Classification Schedule). Serials processing will cover the full cataloging of serials, including handling serials title changes, serials vs. monographs treatment decisions, check-in of serial issues, maintenance of holding and items records, identification of release patterns, designation and enumeration changes that can often be quite frequent. The Librarian needs to be detail-oriented and capable of working within a team environment to handle all aspects of monographs and serials acquisitions and cataloging.

The candidate will have excellent communication skills in English, be willing to work closely within a collaborative team environment and offer insights to improve productivity and workflows. The incumbent will report directly to the Israel and Judaica Section Head and have opportunities to gain knowledge and experience working within a production-driven workplace.

The librarian will have proven competency in the following areas:

Ability to read, speak, and write in English and read Hebrew; knowledge of Yiddish and Russian are highly desired Ability to perform library acquisitions in English and Hebrew Ability to use integrated library systems, applications, and other information technologies Knowledge of library metadata rules, practices, and procedures Ability to acquire and process analog and digital library materials Ability to communicate concisely and effectively in speech and writing Ability to work closely and cooperatively within a team setting

Eligibility : This opportunity is open to permanent Library Collections and Services Group staff who have permission from their supervisor.

Work Schedule : Monday – Friday (flextime) , telework (up to 2 days a week).
