The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of working with nascent organizations to enhance membership growth. They will have experience in historic preservation, and possesses expert knowledge of African American history and culture.

The Executive Director will have day-to-day operational and administrative responsibility for the Museum. The candidate will aspects such as public programming, exhibits, and grant writing that support the Museum's mission and vision. Using Our CRM "Network For Good" they will oversee visitor and membership services, archives and collections, digitization, research requests, communications - mailings, social media, website, IT systems, and facility maintenance.

The Executive Director will embrace DEIB initiatives, and have a strong commitment to antiracism, accessibility, equity, inclusion. A desire to create and contribute to a positive work environment are important aspects of this central position through the enforcement of a zero-tolerance policy for workplace bullying in all its forms and will be committed to creating a culture where every member of the board, volunteers, and staff feel valued, seen, heard, and appreciated in order to uplift and support all board members ensuring the museum's mission is effectively advanced.

The Executive Director will make sure that all documents within and coming from the museum will have inclusive language, acknowledge pronouns and create a culture of belonging.

This role demands a passionate advocate for African American heritage who can inspire and engage the Board of Directors and the community.

The Executive Director has a working knowledge of CRMs, preferably our "Network For Good" CRM and makes sure that donation acknowledgements are written and sent, and that a donor and membership database is maintained in the CRM.

The Executive Director provides leadership and oversight to all aspects of daily operations and works well with staff, volunteers and interns while assisting donors, visitors, tour groups and researchers.

The Executive Director works closely with the Museum Board of Directors attending weekly remote and in person monthly board and committee meetings, providing a monthly report to the board on the museum's activities.

The Executive Director assists with the preparation of the annual budget, and is a fiscally responsible individual who understands financial management and works within the organization's finances and budget.

The Executive Director represents the Museum in a professional manner to the community, by inviting the Board of Directors to participate with them in city, county and state heritage and cultural activities that promote the Museum, its mission, and contribute to the cultural health of the area.

The candidate should be comfortable developing and nurturing partnerships with an array of individuals and organizations including, but not limited to, schools, government agencies and community groups that are both a part of, and an adjunct to, the mission of the Museum.

The Executive director will be a leader who is self-motivated, and able to work cooperatively and collaboratively in multiple situations, including with Museum board members and volunteers, who provide much of the day-to-day work that is done by the Museum.

Excellent writing and presentation skills are important in this position.

DUTIES OF THIS POSITION INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO, THE FOLLOWING:

  • Reports to the Board of Directors
  • Provides leadership and direction in the development of short- and long-range plans and projects, including but not limited to working with the board of directors with respect to the design, planning, construction and equipping of the museum building.
  • Must embrace technological advancements and AI initiatives, staying at the forefront of innovation in the cultural sectors
  • Supervises all paid and volunteer staff at the Museum
  • Oversees collection management and volunteer training for Museum best practices in collections and archives.
  • Performs or oversees the performance of a variety of administrative activities, including budgeting and financial management, website updates, and social media communication and outreach.
  • Maintains or oversees the maintenance of donor and member mailings to museum donors, museum members, and community members through the use of the "Network For Good" CRM.
  • Plans and executes exhibits and programs as determined by short- and long-range plans according to the Museum's mission.
  • Works directly with visitors, tour groups, researchers and donors on a daily basis and performs day-to-day museum activities.
  • Prepares and makes oral and written presentations to the board, the public, the cities, the county, department heads, and outside agencies.
  • Attends weekly remote meetings and monthly in person board meetings and committee meetings and Museum events.
  • Provides to the board a monthly written report regarding daily operations and happenings at the museum.
  • Maintains and fulfills the Museum's contractual obligations with the Town of Huntington, including the submission of any required reports and/or documents.
  • Makes certain that the Museum participates in annual community events as required by the Town of Huntington and as expected by the public.
  • Writes and administers grants awarded by governmental and non-governmental agencies and foundations for sustained support and projects.
  • Assists the board with fundraising events as determined by ad hoc fundraising board committees.
  • Works with a variety of educational, governmental and community groups in partnership where activities of the museum can be included.
  • Stays active in community groups such as the Huntington Chamber of Commerce and other community organizations to maintain a high Museum visibility in the community.
  • Attends, as much as possible, peripheral community events sponsored by community organizations.

  • Because of the strong link to the community that is required of this position, the candidate must have some knowledge of New York and the history of the migration of African Americans to the area.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, with ability to create and execute public presentations.
  • Strong computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office applications/programs, social media platforms; knowledge of CRMs or Network For Good a plus.
  • Valid New York driver's license or identification card.

  • Experience in managing capital campaigns.
