formerly known as the Public Defender Association (PDA), is a non-profit corporation that advocates for legal system reform and develops alternatives that shift from a punishment paradigm to a system that supports individual and community health.

We also provide a direct services program (CoLEAD) and technical assistance to community partners committed to these goals.

Grounding reform in a public health and safety framework, PDA develops new strategies and implements models that improve on conventional responses to crime and public order issues.

In collaboration with community and government partners, PDA uses policy advocacy, organizing, litigation, and public education to achieve its goals.


Summary:
PDA's Operations and Administrative teams include the Finance, Information Technology, Operations, and Administrative Teams. Everyone in this space is a leader.

The Senior Account will be a valued member of the Finance Team, assisting in the accounting functions to support our continued agency success across the program areas.

Reporting to the Director of Finance, this position is customer-centered and cultivates and stewards relationships for the benefit of our agency.

Thus, the desired candidate is expected to come to the position with a fun and positive spirit of collaboration and innovation and see the opportunity to resolve issues by taking initiative that works for all.

This team intentionally fosters trust and team building, and the individual in this position will enhance these efforts.

We are a multifaceted, hands-on team in a high-functioning and fast-paced origination and jump in to assist each other often, no matter role or title.


Essential Job Functions:

  • Responsible for the monthly billing cycle for assigned revenue contracts.
  • Ensure comprehensive understanding of and compliance with all billing and budget requirements associated with revenue contracts. Decipher if changes are needed to the general ledger structure or to billing templates.
  • Maintain all billing instructions, monitor and prepare general ledger for billing, gather supporting documentation.
  • Ensure expenses are properly booked and allocated to grants and contracts under this role's review.
  • Ensure accurate coding of expenses; review general ledger monthly in preparation for monthly billing cycle.
  • Assist in the monthly allocation of journal entries.
  • Assist with monthly program reporting; ensuring the accuracy of the mapping of actuals to budget categories.
  • Support the department in the continued initiative to develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls.
  • Responsible for accurate and timely reconciliation of assigned balance sheet accounts.
  • Management of gift cards from receipt, proper and secure storage, tracking usage and booking associated journal entries to reconciliation.
  • Monthly review of revenue coding and reconciliation.
  • Assist in the preparation of the annual PDA budget.
  • Assist in the preparation of annual program-level budgets and periodic updates
  • Assist with Single Audit documentation and reports and SEFA and Grant Reporting.
  • Assist with yearly financial statement audit coordination.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Essential Job Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.

Experience:

  • 5 + years of GAAP accounting experience.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • General ledger account reconciliations.
  • Strong Excel skills.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Experience reading revenue contracts and deciphering accounting treatment is a plus.
  • Non-profit accounting experience is a plus.
  • Federal Grants compliance understanding is a plus.

Ability to:

  • Balance accounts and reconcile financial statements.
  • Review records for errors and inconsistencies.
  • Build crosschecks and verifications into work to improve accuracy and provide audit trail.
  • Aptitude for numbers and quantitative skills. Accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Work independently but properly assess situations for needed assistance.
  • Exercise good judgment.
  • Interpret and apply policies, rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Maintain multiple, pressing projects at one time and properly prioritize deadlines.
  • Communicate clearly and kindly with staff regarding accounting deadlines and information, Payroll, benefits, and HR Matters.
  • Write clear and concise accounting procedures documents.
  • Participate in a team-based leadership structure.
  • Demonstrated intermediate to advanced computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, G-Suite email system, and Adobe Acrobat Pro, ability to conduct internet research, and ability to learn and master new software applications.
  • Maintain a high level of emotional intelligence, clear communication, and flexibility in the mode of communication is necessary.
  • Demonstrate cultural competence and sensitivity in working with diverse clients, communities, and colleagues.
  • Strong drive and initiative with the ability to manage time well in an environment of many concurrent assignments and deadlines.
  • Demonstrate a passion for our mission.

Location:
The PDA Office is in Seattle, WA; however, this position is fully remote. Normal hours will be M-F days, with standard hours established in consultation with the Director of Finance.

Compensation:
Salary increases 3% annually, subject to Board of Directors approval. An additional cost of living increase is provided at the discretion of the Board of Directors.
