Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

The Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE) is UNC-Chapel Hill’s pan-university faculty development center, supporting faculty at all career stages. The CFE supports faculty members’ progress through the various stages of their careers in their roles as teachers, researchers, and leaders. The CFE serves as a hub for faculty at all levels to access and utilize mentoring to enable them to achieve their goals. The CFE offers programs, resources, and consultations in all areas to promote faculty success. The CFE values partnerships across campus to offer a synergistic approach to faculty development, connecting faculty to resources across the University. The Center for Faculty Excellence is dedicated to equitable support for faculty with attention to diversity and inclusive teaching and faculty development.

Position Summary:

This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

The Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE) at UNC Chapel Hill seeks a Senior Faculty Development Consultant within the Teaching and Learning unit to develop, lead, evaluate, and enhance initiatives that advance the Center’s mission to build community, provide training and support, and foster the professional development of teaching for faculty in varied disciplines and across all career stages.

The Senior Faculty Development Consultant contributes to five key areas of activity at the CFE:

1)Training and Program Administration:
Design and lead relevant, engaging, and effective workshops, training events, and programs to onboard, educate, and support faculty and instructors in evidence-based and student-centered teaching practices. Areas of focus include course design, modes of teaching (in-person/ hybrid/remote), instructional technologies, critical pedagogy, inclusive teaching, pedagogies of care, and educational research on teaching, and SoTL Scholarship of Teaching and Learning).

2)Consultations and Observations:
Provide teaching consultations and observations to help individual faculty or instructors, departments, units, and/or schools identify areas for improvement and strategic solutions to improve them. Topics may include course design and alignment, creating syllabi, classroom climate and management, student development and diversity, teaching strategies, grading and assessment, using feedback, as well as broader areas such as curriculum development, curriculum mapping, and preparation for promotion and/or tenure.

3)Research and Resource Development:
Conduct independent and collaborative scholarly research to identify faculty needs, clarify best frameworks or disseminate best practices; collaborate with CFE colleagues and campus partners to compile and create online resources for teaching, and to conduct research and contribute to scholarship (SoTL) that will address teaching and learning issues and support professional development in teaching.

4)Partnerships:
Pursue opportunities to collaborate with campus partners and develop focused support to enhance innovative teaching and learning; partners may include faculty or staff in related campus units (digital learning, educational technology, accessibility) or instructional designers that support teaching and learning, or various committees.

5)CFE Integration, Assessment and Reporting:
Actively participate in the Teaching and Learning team and the Center for Faculty Excellence team to advocate for campus-wide faculty concerns through regular meetings, ongoing resource development, and communications to help develop ongoing programs, resources, and program evaluations; contribute to the CFE’s comprehensive approach to faculty development across the career span, and assist with ongoing assessments, data analysis, and annual outcomes reports.

The Senior Faculty Development Consultant will report to the Associate Director for Faculty Development in Teaching and Learning and will work closely in collaboration with the Teaching and Learning team members, with other CFE staff, and with campus partners to help CFE extend and improve the opportunities for faculty members across campus to gain the skills and knowledge they need to fulfill teaching and advising roles at all stages of their academic careers.

The CFE is UNC-Chapel Hill’s pan-university faculty development center. Through its four areas of focus (teaching and learning, research, mentoring, and leadership), the CFE supports faculty members’ progress through the various stages of their careers in their roles as teachers, researchers, mentors and leaders, and connects them to resources across the University.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities related to consulting or developing course content, curriculum, instructional technique/technology, distance education design, development or implementation, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

At least 3 years of work experience in faculty or educational development is required. Some postsecondary teaching experience, significant experience in educational development, and consulting with faculty or instructors in a university setting is required. Experience in non-university settings will be considered depending on applicant’s ability to apply their experience to faculty development in the higher education setting.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

At least 5 years of work experience in faculty or educational development is preferred.

Mixed methods (qualitative/quantitative) research relevant for educational research
Certifications with Quality Matters (APPQMR, Peer Reviewer)
Training in accessibility / digital accessibility
Training on mental health first aid, LGBTQ+, peer support, etc.
