The Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine (FJHM) is the dedicated development and alumni relations team supporting the entities that comprise Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM), including clinical departments, hospitals, satellite clinics, and the School of Medicine. We contribute to Johns Hopkins Medicine's mission of patient care, research, and education through securing philanthropy, building and maintaining donor and alumni relationships, and supporting institutional priorities. FJHM partners closely with institutional leaders, faculty, and clinicians to engage alumni, patients, donors, and prospects in JHM's work to advance medicine and improve the human condition.
The Senior Associate Director will report to the Director of Development and collaborate with other development team members in the planning, implementation, and management of major gift fundraising efforts for the benefit of the Wilmer Eye Institute. The Senior Associate Director will lead the development efforts for one or more specific divisions, research center and/or satellite clinics within the department, working directly with senior and junior faculty members on establishing priorities for their individual research, as well as, for the division/center/satellite.
They will manage a portfolio of annual, major and principal gift prospects and current donors, conducting appropriate identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship activities. Also, they will work closely with faculty, administrators, volunteers and patients, as well as professional colleagues to accomplish fundraising goals. The Senior Associate Director will manage a portfolio of approximately 125 major and annual gift prospects with an individual major gift goal of +/- $2.5M annually.
Key responsibilities:
- Develop a comprehensive understanding of the research, teaching, and clinical programs and priorities of the Wilmer Eye Institute, in order to represent these needs both internally and externally in the context of a strategic vision that compels the interest and support required to achieve funding priorities of the Institute and divisions.
- Build a robust portfolio of individual, foundation and corporate donors. Maintain a portfolio of 125 annual and major gift donors through cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship including written and verbal communication and personal donor visits.
- Provide the day-to day operations and strategy for a comprehensive fundraising program that capitalizes on current and emerging opportunities for support while identifying and maintaining a group of top prospects.
- Serve as primary liaison to approximately 15 faculty members.
- Help motivate, educate and train faculty to successfully guide them through the development process to engage them as fundraising partners; focus will be on identifying and evaluating giving potential of patient prospects through personal visits and research, development and implementation of appropriate cultivation and solicitation strategies, with the aim to secure major gift support.
- Complete 100 or more meaningful prospect and donor visits per year. Performance targets also include benchmarks for funds raised, proposals developed and submitted.
- Utilize CRM systems to prioritize patient prospects based on HIPAA-compliant variables. Analyze data to identify new prospects capable of giving annual and major gifts, and track giving trends, measuring the effectiveness of outreach efforts. Produce reports (financial and/or development) as required, utilizing Excel, Access, Word, JHAS, etc.
- Work closely with the Office of Development Research to identify new strategies for prospect identification whether patients or unaffiliated constituents. Also partner with other central offices like the Office of Gift Planning, the Office of Relationship Management, etc.
- Prepare and direct preparation of case statements, major proposals, solicitation letters and other cultivation and informational material for prospects and donors. Work with development's science writer and marketing as needed to ensure messaging and branding are accurate.
- Partner with the Director in support of specific faculty or divisions as needed.
- Assist with planning and execution of major development events, such as Professorship dedications, board meetings, etc.
- Represent the Wilmer Eye Institute on internal DAR and FJHM committees, and at external conferences for grateful patient fundraising, clinical alumni engagement, and planned giving as appropriate.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the development efforts for Wilmer, FJHM and DAR.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree.
- Five years professional related experience.
- Hands -on, results-oriented, collaborative fundraiser with proven experience and success in fundraising management.
- Successful discovery, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of six- and seven figure donors.
- Comprehensive knowledge of all fundraising approaches, with special understanding of grateful families, major gifts, and special projects.
- Successful track record of working with internal and external constituents, as well as volunteer and committee management.
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and demonstrated effective writing with both internal and external constituents, including public-speaking skill at delivering a compelling and persuasive case for philanthropic support required.
- Strong computer literacy skills required and the ability to learn new software.
- Must be able to work independently, ability to work as part of a team, manage projects, determine priorities, and maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality.
- Ability to thrive in an extremely fast-paced environment is essential.
- Travel is required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree.
- Experience includes personal solicitation of six- and seven-figure gifts, with a documented record of productivity, preferably in health care or higher education.
