Director of Learning Commons

The Director oversees the development, coordination, and implementation of tutoring services that reside in the Learning Commons. The Director will coordinate with academic department heads and faculty to ensure appropriate tutoring services are in place to contribute to student success. The Director will contribute to institutional retention goals to determine needs of student in terms of tutoring help outside of classes.

Major Responsibilities
1. Oversee daily operations of the Learning Commons
Assist students as they research or write class papers and interpret reading assignments, or assist students with developing mathematical skills and techniques to complete assignments (depending on director’s pedagogical background).
Manage a front desk to match students to tutoring needs.
Act as a liaison between Learning Commons and librarians as needed.
Report unresolved issues with tutoring and staffing to the appropriate office.
Give tours of the Learning Commons and visit classes to talk about available services.
Create and maintain handouts for tutors and students as appropriate.
2. Supervise tutors and assure sufficient tutor coverage for the Learning Commons.
Oversee recruitment, hiring, training, and scheduling of tutors for writing and ESL.
Work with faculty to recruit tutors as well as supervise (schedule and assess) tutors.
Work with staff in the HEOP office to coordinate tutors for HEOP in conjunction with other tutors in the Learning Commons.
3. Oversee recruitment, hiring, training, scheduling, and assessment of Graduate Assistant.
4. Provide assessment data for the Learning Commons.
Work with the Dean of Assessment to identify and develop appropriate assessment tools as needed for tutoring services in the Learning Commons.
Collect and maintain statistics on use of tutoring services in the Learning Commons.
5. Perform additional tasks as needed or assigned by the Dean of the Library and Learning Commons.
6. An opportunity to teach up to six credits of undergraduate coursework in appropriate field based upon identified department faculty needs and department screening and recommendation.
Driving Responsibilities Travel Supervises Undergraduate Student Tutors, Graduate Assistant Education & Experience Qualifications
Experience in teaching students how to write or training students to help others with writing, and/or experience in teaching mathematics or training students to help others with mathematics.
A master’s or doctoral degree in a field of expertise related to writing, mathematics, or education.
Minimum Skills/Abilities
Good oral and written communication skills.
Organized and able to manage student workers.
The functions of the position are usually performed sitting, but may require some amount of time standing. Some amount of stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, lifting, walking, carrying and other movements may be required. Tasks involving working on a computer keyboard, typewriter, calculator, etc. involve extensive wrist and hand movement. All individuals are required to be able to perform these movements without significant risk of injury to themselves or others, or to otherwise demonstrate or explain how they can perform the essential functions listed above.
