Who You Are:

ExtensisHR is seeking a Manager Rating and Analysis to join their organization. This experienced actuarial professional will support medical pricing through rating studies and market analysis and partner in the development of the company's health insurance risk management strategy, underwriting and pricing program to achieve both a target MLR and WSE volume growth. The Manager Rating and Analysis will support the underwriting process by identifying AI driven process and decision efficiencies, working closely with the senior Actuary, Sales, and our internal and external team of healthcare underwriting professionals. The ideal candidate will have a combination of commercial group actuarial experience including underwriting and rating engine support working for either a carrier or a PEO. The individual must have a track record of excellence in developing rigorous analysis and modeling to develop pricing and risk management strategies.

What You'll Do:

The Benefits team develops and manages a large and complex program to meet the needs of our diverse and rapidly growing worksite employee population, which exceeds 25,000 and is continuing to grow. As a Manager Rating and Analysis, you will report to the Senior Director Underwriting and work closely with our internal and external actuaries to develop and implement pricing recommendations.
• Monitor experience and make pricing recommendations based on both internal data and industry best practice. Identify changes in trends that may impact future claims costs, including potential strategies to offset.
• Maintain and improve the new business pricing system. Support the development and implementation of automated underwriting / pricing rules in the rating system.
• Provide actuarial expertise for the renewal pricing annual rate study, carrier negotiations and risk stratification.
• Support underwriting by reviewing specific cases and following established UW guidelines during the renewal season and when new business volumes are high.
• Partner with senior and executive management in finance, benefits, claims, sales, and other operational areas as appropriate to achieve underwriting and risk profile objectives.
• Evaluate financial pricing and product strategies of competitors to ensure market competitiveness of ExtensisHR plans.
• Collaborate with senior members of the benefit management team and other key stakeholders and partners on the accurate pricing of new products and new markets.
• Maintain knowledge of current and emerging developments/trends for health insurance; assess the impact and collaborate with executive/senior management to incorporate new trends and developments in current and future strategies.
• Assist with coordinating transfer of data to external vendors, plan providers, auditors, and consultants to ensure accuracy.

What You Bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in mathematics, statistics, economics, or a related field
  • ASA designation or higher designation from the Society of Actuaries and MAAA
  • 5+ years' experience pricing group health insurance products (e.g., fully insured, level funded, self-insured or stop-loss) in a carrier and / or a PEO environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills - ability to interface with all levels of the organization and influence business leaders. Ability to interact with benefit, independent actuarial consultants, and carriers.
  • Demonstrated experience with complex group actuarial pricing, rating, and underwriting methods including:
    • Understand the core principles and functionality of decision, descriptive, predictive and prescriptive analytic methods including forecasting, statistical and machine learning techniques,
    • Coordinate, prepare, perform and audit actuarial analyses to assist in the development of complex actuarial formulations leading to the recommendation of pricing, trending, and/or risk assessment strategies,
    • Perform data exploration using a combination of statistical programming languages (including, but not limited R, Python, SQL, SAS) and deploy predictive analytics and machine learning techniques to improve risk prediction, improve reporting, trend and financial forecasting in a manner that is actuarially sound, and enable real-time results and operational efficiencies, and
    • Support creation of monthly analytics and reporting. Interpret and communicate results,
    • Document and support modeling assumptions to maintain audit-readiness.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and proficient across MS Office suite.
  • Excellent analytical thinking, mathematical, problem solving and project management skills.
  • The ability to make sound decisions and/or recommendations based on analysis of data but also including some "out of the box" decisions/recommendations.
