As a Safety Manager for Underground, you will be responsible for providing oversight of all safety activities and leadership of assigned safety resources for your assigned project within the Underground division. This division supports projects that involve underground construction in all of our market areas including Power, Oil and Gas, Transportation, Mining, Industrial and Water/Wastewater. Our Safety Managers are expected to travel where the work is and are hands on Managers, working at the sites, involved in safety investigations, and inspections in the field.
District OverviewKiewit has been rated by ENR as the #1 Design/Build contractor in North America and has the experience, technology and equipment to complete even the most complex tunneling projects. Our Underground Division has been constructing underground facilities (tunneling, deep foundations) since 1949, and has completed more than 100 underground-related projects totaling more than $1B. Our long standing success is built on our depth of expertise, safety record, access to specialty equipment and the ability to self-perform work. We are recognized as a leader in the tunneling industry and our services include TBM Rock, TBM soft ground, sequential excavation, drill and blast, shaft excavation, tunnel rehab and numerous trenchless methods.
LocationOne of the many things that makes Kiewit’s culture unique is that we go where the work is, which exposes your career to abundant opportunities, so project locations may vary. We are hiring for a large project in Lead, SD.
We often relocate our teams or provide per diem and travel support to our project locations. Must be willing to relocate or travel as needed to where the work is located.
Responsibilities• Managing the company environmental health and safety programs at the project level, driving a safety-oriented approach to work.
• Compiling, analyzing, and interpreting occupational illness and accident statistical data at the project level; recommending process and product safety features that will reduce employee exposure to chemical, physical, and biological work hazards.
• Routinely inspecting the facilities, machinery, and safety equipment in order to identify and correct potential hazards, and to ensure safety regulation compliance.
• Routinely monitoring the workforce for unsafe behaviors and coach employees on the correct behaviors when observed.
• Developing environmental health and safety training materials to include manuals, brochures, PowerPoint presentations etc.
• Developing a paperwork management system to track training records to track all safety training initiatives conducted personally or by outside consultants/vendors.
• Interpreting safety regulations for the project.
• Coordinating and presenting safety training to support client requirements including new hire orientation, fall protection, confined space, lockout/tagout and repertory.
• Interfacing with Occupational Safety and Health (OSHA) (Provincial or federal) officials/inspectors in the event or a site visit.
• Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Safety, or a related field of study. 10+Years of experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience managing heavy Civil construction projects in an environmental health and safety leadership role with CSP or CHST. Candidates with 10+ years of safety management experience without CSP/CHST would be considered but certs are preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to manage all aspects of a safety program on projects of increasing complexity and demonstrated ability to lead other safety team members in site investigation, hazard correction, and safety regulation compliance.
• Knowledge of OSHA and MSHA regulations and hazard recognition, record keeping and injury management skills.
• Working knowledge of computers and experience with Microsoft Word and Excel.
• Strong organizational and time management skill and excellent written and verbal communication skills. Must be detail oriented with the ability to recognize discrepancies in construction work, with the ability to provide solutions to mitigate safety incidents.
• Able to interact professionally with all levels of management while simultaneously manage a diversified workload and challenging situations efficiently and effectively.
• CPR/First Aid, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification and OSHA/MSHA instructor certifications are preferred.
• Ability to freely access all points of a construction site in wide-ranging climates and environment and able and willing to work on projects underground.
• Regularly sit, stand, walk and talk and listen; occasionally lift and move up objects up to 30 pounds.
• Must be willing to relocate and go where the work is.
