The Director is responsible for the safe and effective acquisition and lifecycle management of the Academy's facilities infrastructure. The Director is responsible for directing all operations of the Facilities and Infrastructure Management unit which includes the direct oversight and management of the Academy's Capital Improvement Program and Facilities Maintenance and Repairs, and Equipment budget of approximately $90M.

The Director must also successfully lead change management efforts (e.g., integration of capital and repair projects, instituting project management as a discipline throughout the organization, better alignment of resources with revised processes, building and implementing strategic planning processes) within the USMMA organization to ensure effective execution of facilities management processes. The Director interacts with senior executives and managers across USMMA, MARAD, and throughout the Department of Transportation, as well as Members of Congress and their staff, other Federal agencies, state and local governments, and numerous USMMA stakeholders (e.g., alumni associations) to provide updates on project status and to detail capital and maintenance needs at the Academy.

MARAD programs promote the economic competitiveness, efficiency, and productivity of the U.S. marine transportation system and to help ensure that sealift capability and capacity, including personnel are available to support the national and economic security needs of the Nation.

MARAD works in a variety of areas involving ships and shipping, port and vessel operations, national security, strategic mobility, government ship disposal, mariner education, and environment.
