Duties and Responsibilities

This internship announcement is valid for one (1) candidate who will intern in the Exhibits Unit. The Exhibits Unit is part of the Visitors Services Section, Outreach Division, Department of Global Communications in New York City which engages and educates people and their communities worldwide to encourage support for the ideals and activities of the United Nations. The Exhibits Unit facilitates the review and production of exhibits for display at UN Headquarters and on the UN Exhibits website. These exhibits are thematic, informative, and educational and showcase important topics that the UN works on as part of the outreach to the general public on UN priority issues. This internship is designed to be full-time and in-person in New York but can be adjusted based on the request of the successful candidate, the nature of the tasks, needs of the Units and/or Section, and the discretion of the manager. Full-time interns work five days a week (35 hours) and part-time interns work less than 34 hours a week. This is under the supervision of a staff member in the Exhibits Unit within the Visitors Services Section to which they are assigned, although they also support the operation as a whole. The intern will participate in the day-to-day work of the Exhibits Unit. Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background and the projects the Unit is currently undertaking. Interns' responsibilities may include: • Supporting communication and outreach activities in relation to UN exhibitions, including drafting and editing website and social media content and monitoring social media output • Researching, compiling, and organizing materials for use in the development of UN exhibitions • Designing exhibit materials as needed • Assisting with planning and organizing exhibit installations and opening events • Providing general office support (drafting correspondence and other communications, setting up and maintaining files/records and databases, organizing meetings, etc.) • Providing support for the work of Visitor Services Section • Perform other duties as required




Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent). (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience; however, a field of study that is related to the type of internship is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (Bachelor or equivalent), Master's or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor's, Master's or Ph.D. Programme. Good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word and MS PowerPoint, is required. Ability to draft short articles and/or social media posts is desirable. Good knowledge of design software applications, such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Canva is desirable.




Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for this internship.
