The Registered Nurse - Patient Safety Specialist (RN-PSS) functions as an advanced clinician and executes position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience, and creative approaches to management of complex patient care. Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates delivery of care based on age specific components. Demonstrates performance and leadership that is broad enough to improve the care for a group of patients. Responsible for the documented outcomes at the program or service level. Program or service level outcomes must be broad and complex and can be demonstrated at any organizational level within a facility, Veterans Integrated Systems Network (VISN), or Veterans Affairs Central Office (VACO). Assumes responsibility for the patient safety activities of the assigned program(s). They demonstrate sound decision-making and judgment and possess excellent interpersonal skills. They are self-directed and influences care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team and leading innovative process improvement initiatives.
The RN - PSS executes the position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership; detailed planning; professional communication; creative and innovative approaches to the improvement of patient safety/healthcare program development; possess an ability to organize priorities; meet deadlines; provide in-person, telephonic and electronic professional presentations; demonstrate the ability to work independently. The PSS functions as the lead manager and implementer of patient safety policies and activities developed by the National Center for Patient Safety (NCPS) and is the facility's key person to help build and implement patient safety systems and promote the culture of safety within Veterans Affairs (VA) facilities and for VA patients in all healthcare settings.
Other duties include but are not limited to:
Developing, maintaining and operating the VHA's patient safety processes.
Collaborating, training and directing patient safety activities of personnel.
Translating policies, theories and strategies into action.
Training and implementing patient safety and Root Cause Analysis (RCA) process to clinicians, management, and all relevant support personnel.
Maintaining clear communication between the facility and the NCPS.
Applying specialized principles and practices of health management in directing or supporting a health care delivery system.
Ensuring actions contribute to a mode of continued accreditation readiness regarding Joint Commission (JC), Office of Inspector General (OIG), Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), VA surveyors, Laboratory College of American Pathologists (CAP), and other respective survey teams.

Compressed/Flexible: May be eligible for compressed tour of duty after successful completion of service orientation per Supervisor Discretion.
Telework: May be eligible for 1-2 days per pay period as determined by agency policy and the needs of the facility.
Virtual: This is not a virtual position.
