Position Term: June 7, 2024 â August 30, 2024, expected to be in person for specific program dates:

            Training: July 1-3, 2024, 9am-5pm.
NYSA Program:  July 8, 2024 â August 16, 2024, Monday-Thursday 9am â 5pm. Minimum 15 hours per week, preference to candidate seeking more hours)

 

BACKGROUND:
Since 1999, the IRC has developed partnerships with New York City public schools, community-based organizations and local colleges and universities to support the positive development of refugee youth and their communities in New York City.  The Education & Learning department provides year-round programming working directly with refugee youth, their parents and families, and their schools.

SCOPE OF WORK:
The Newcomer Youth Summer Academy is a six-week program focusing on preparing newly arrived youth to succeed at their grade level in the New York City public school system. Up to 130 students ages 5 â 21 from over 20 countries will participate in academic, creative arts, physical education, and social emotional learning classes. Field Trips are held on Fridays.

The Family Communications Intern will work with the Student Support Team to keep up-to-date records of student attendance. Additionally, the Family Communications Intern will conduct outreach to parents of students who are absent or tardy, using interpretation services if necessary; interns will also facilitate other family contact for purposes not related to behavioral concerns such as reminders of community events, field trips, etc. The Family Communications Intern will complete other tasks and duties as assigned by the Ops team.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
With the Student Support Team (beginning of day)

  • With the Student Support Team (beginning of day):
  • Participate in Student Support Team onboarding in June, attend all staff training, and be present for program meetings and staff development activities thereafter
  • Compile attendance data in the excel tracker and/or other internal systems every morning
  • Conduct outreach to the families of absent/tardy students, using interpretation services as needed
  • Other related tasks as assigned by Student Support Specialists or the supervisor
  • With the Ops Team (end of day):
  • Facilitate programmatic outreach to families, reminding them of upcoming events and sending relevant info
  • Assist with interpretations of newsletters, memos, and more
  • Other related tasks as assigned by the Ops team
  • Complete all required reporting on time. 
  • Comply with all agency policies and protocols
  • Participate in parent/teacher conferences during the Academy
  • Other relevant duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:

REQUIREMENTS:
·       Undergraduate level student/graduate in Social Work, Education or similar field preferred
HS students considered on a case-by-case basis
·       Strong interpersonal and communication skills
·       Experience working with refugee and/or immigrant populations preferred
·       Organized, reliable, and flexible
·       Ability to work independently and as part of a team
·       Fluency in written and spoken English required. Second language proficiency in relevant language highly desirable (including Spanish, Ukrainian, Russian, Haitian Creole, French, Pashto, Fulani, Wolof, Dari, Farsi, Arabic, Mandingo, Nepali, Tigrinya, Mam, Garifuna)

Working Environment: The Academy takes place in a centrally located New York City public school. All participants must be willing to relocate to New York City for the entirety of the Program.
