About the Role

The Director of Development and Fundraising at The Johns Hopkins University's Carey Business School is a critical leadership position that plays a key role in advancing the school's academic priorities through philanthropic support. This position manages a team of development professionals, reports directly to the Associate Dean for Development and Alumni Relations, and focuses on meeting the philanthropic goals established to support Carey's academic initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Strategic Fundraising: Focus on securing commitments of $50,000+ with an expectation of raising $1,000,000 or more per year.
  • Team Leadership: Oversee the direct fundraising efforts of the school, including direct response appeals and portfolio-based gift officers.
  • Major Gift Prospecting: Manage a personal portfolio of major gift prospects and conduct a minimum of 75 cultivation and solicitation visits a year, including the preparation of written proposals.
  • Collaboration and Relationship Building: Work collaboratively across The Johns Hopkins University and build strong relationships across the Carey Business School's departments and faculty leadership to develop a substantive understanding of the school's funding needs.
  • Prospect Identification and Evaluation: Identify and evaluate the giving potential of high-end affiliated and unaffiliated annual and major gift prospects through personal visits and research.
  • Development Planning: Develop and manage the annual development plan for the Carey Business School, including setting goals, developing work plans, monitoring efforts, and evaluating results.
  • University-Wide Engagement: Attend university-wide development meetings and participate in task forces and committees, including liaising with the University's foundation and corporate relations office.
  • Team Management: Participate in the department's budget planning process and manage the production of special fundraising publications, such as campaign case statements and brochures.
  • Leadership and Team Development: Contribute to innovative team building and exceptional leadership to support a robust and highly productive team environment for Carey.
Requirements
  • Education: Bachelor's degree
  • Experience: Seven years related professional experience
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced Degree: Master's degree
  • Development Experience: Seven years of development experience in higher education, including cultivation and solicitation of major gifts and supervisory management experience.
  • Leadership and Management Skills: Strong management knowledge and skills, and superb written and oral communications skills are essential.
  • Fundraising Ability: Proven fundraising ability, knowledge of major prospect management, planned giving instruments, and the ability to exercise independent judgment.
