Job Details:

Purpose
Coach teachers participating in the Sprouting Teachers program to help build their confidence in using the outdoor garden as a teaching space integrated with their curriculum. In addition, advise school/garden leadership on implementing strategies for garden sustainability.

This position will end 5/31/2025, with the potential of extension based on performance and funding.

Responsibilities
Coaching at the elementary schools or virtually depending on district status due to Covid:

Coach teachers on their unique needs regarding obstacles and challenges to using the school garden.

Help teachers find and/or adapt available evidence-based garden curriculum to integrate into their curriculum.

Help teachers find curriculum touchpoints where outdoor learning can be utilized, giving them a long-term sustainable plan for garden integration.

Garden Leadership Committee and sustainability:

Develop a sustainable plan with the teachers and the members of the Garden Leadership Committees for garden use and integration in regards to maintenance, garden use encouragement for teachers, community involvement, and training.

Help school develop sustainable best practices to keep the garden integrated into teaching and community.

Research and evaluation of the program:

Data collection on school and teacher usage of the garden and program, type and amount of curriculum used, and documentation of successful maintenance strategies.

Disseminate findings via website, social media, news channels and potentially presentations at national school gardening and child health conferences across the U.S.

Write and present annual report for funder.

Meet with program team for planning and discussion of other related programs.

Other related functions as assigned.

Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a Nutrition, Horticultural, Public health, Science or related field, or prior experience with school gardens or instructional coaching. Experience teaching children and families, particularly minority, low-income populations. Must have driver's license and vehicle for local travel and be willing and able to drive to selected schools across the Austin and surrounding area during regular school hours (8am -3 pm) as well as attend a meeting directly after school (3-4:30pm). ​Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications
Elementary teacher certification. Spanish proficiency. ​

Salary
$42,000+ depending on qualifications
