Duties

The IT Specialist position is within the Office of the Associate Director of Science and Chief Scientist, Informatics and Data Science Center (IDSC), Digital Stewardship Program and serves as the technical lead in support of the Digital Stewardship Program Manager, facilitating the continuing operation and development of NMNH's Research & Collections Information Systems (RCIS).

In this position, you will:
Manage the functions for the Museum's scientific data and databases of record including RCIS and related systems, establishes criteria, formulates projects, assesses program effectiveness, and analyzes a variety of unusual conditions, problems, or issues. Refine workflows and procedures to enhance the centralized management of the museum's data, as necessary, analyzes and defines data requirements and specifications, develops, and administers data standards. Apply management principles and practices including data manipulation; data standardization; data cleaning and parsing; using relational database management systems; and creates reports using specialized report software. Provide project management and COTR support for IDSC and Digital Stewardship to include liaison to vendors. Identify, develop, and apply program and project management best practices.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as managing collections information systems, including museum collections data models and standards; collecting data requirements and developing data standards, in collaboration with constituents, to meet internal and external needs; uses specialized applications to manipulate, parse and refine data; and writing statements of work with an IT and/or natural history scope.

For all positions individuals must have IT-related experience demonstrating each of the four competencies listed below.
Attention to Detail - Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail. Customer Service - Works with clients and customers (that is, any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unit produces, including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the Government) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services. Oral Communication - Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately. Problem Solving - Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
