What You'll Do

Performs a variety of duties in assisting technical and scientific personnel on various production support, research, and development projects. Typical general functions of this classification include:

  • Checks equipment for proper operation and condition.
  • Develops and assists in developing new and improved methods to increase safety and productivity.
  • Performs associated duties as assigned within the work area to ensure proper housekeeping incidental to care and protection of equipment, records, and procedures.
  • Assists and works with Engineering Technicians of all levels in the familiarization and performance of processes, techniques, and procedures, within their related areas.
  • Performs work with a high degree of accuracy in all phases of duties under general supervision
  • Adheres to operating procedures and other operating standards, with particular emphasis on those pertaining to Safety & Security.
  • Produces legible, correct, and accurate records, inspections, and analysis.
  • Reports defects or malfunctions of equipment.
  • Responsible for maintenance, adjustment, and servicing of assigned equipment in accordance with O&I Standards, maintenance manuals, and/or verbal directions.
  • Maintains assigned work area in a safe and clean condition.
  • Makes observations and reports unusual occurrences or events that may affect safety, quality, or understanding of experiments or operations.
  • Assists professional staff as required in identifying problems and in establishing new and improved procedures and techniques.
  • Responsible for applying good judgment and skill in the performance of assigned tasks.
  • Precisely follows prescribed safety procedures in the handling of explosive, toxic, flammable, or otherwise hazardous materials.
  • Demonstrates the ability to methodically perform tasks and assigned functions.
  • Ensures that operations are conducted according to all applicable environmental, safety, health, and management requirements.
  • Assists professional staff with the training of other Engineering Technicians as assigned.
  • Responsible for maintaining a knowledge of applicable Federal, State, DOE, Corporate and Plant rules, regulations, Labor Agreements and Plant-wide operating policies and procedures.
  • Required to attend and/or successfully complete training classes as determined by the Training and Development Technologies Department, through General Employee Training (Reference DOE Order 5480.19), and Management.
  • Participates in worker involvement including input to work planning and methods to identify hazards and controls.
  • Understands a worker's right to stop work when they feel their own or other's personal safety is jeopardized.
  • Attends all required safety meetings and training. Offers suggestions on improvements to the work environment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
What You'll Do (cont.)

MACHINING

  • Uses conventional and computer numerically controlled (CNC) machine tools to fabricate parts;machine tools may include mills, lathes, saws, water jets, 3D printers, etc.
  • Works from sketches, assembly drawings, and detailed procedures to perform complex machining operations
  • Programs equipment using manual data input
  • Uses initiative and care in maintaining tolerances within prescribed limits on fabricated parts
  • Sets up machine tools and adjusts the necessary tool offsets
  • Fabricates, inspects, and assembles experimental devices requiring complicated setups with a high degree of accuracy, using a variety of precision measuring instruments
  • Sets up, adjusts, readjusts, and operates special machines and related equipment for machining of high explosives and inert components to required specific shapes, tolerances, and sizes
  • Specializes in the operation of precision machines in the machining of both explosive and inert components, requiring a high degree of specialized machining skills and knowledge of explosive safety practices
  • Performs mathematical calculations and uses complex tooling and gages in order to accomplish job
  • Must be able to work with metric or English dimensions
  • Designs and fabricates fixtures used in test fire and explosives manufacturing
  • Performs component disposition
  • Evaluates data collected in accordance with prescribed procedures for specific operations
  • Expedites material for further operations

  • Must meet current specific education/experience requirements as noted below depending on assignment.
  • Must be physically fit to perform the above job functions as determined by Medical Evaluation.
  • All qualifications, work history, training, and education are to be verified by direct contact with former employers and/or documented proof. Must have no documented quality or safety issues during the most recent 18 month period.
Minimum Job Requirements
  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Satisfactory completion of an approved machinist apprenticeship program or four years of recent experience with lathes, mills, saws, or related MDI/CNC machine tools

OR

  • Two years' experience as a Technician Associate for Machining.
Functional Requirements
  • Lifting or carrying 40 pounds.
  • Straight pulling or pushing 1 hour/day.
  • Reaching above shoulder level.
  • Ability to keyboard.
  • Repetitive motion of the wrist/forearm.
  • Walking 2 hours/day.
  • Standing 2 hours/day.
  • Normal far vision in at least one eye correctable to 20/40 (20 feet)
  • Near vision (must be able to read computer screen, manuscript, book etc. at approximately 13-16 inches from the face).
  • Depth perception (ability to tell how close or far an object is).
  • No evidence of current drug or alcohol abuse.
  • Ability to use small tools.
  • Ability to perform safety-sensitive duties.
