Brief Description of Duties:
The Athletic Communications Assistant is responsible for the overall communication of athletic department news, intercollegiate contest results, team/department accomplishments and all other athletic department related information by initiating and cultivating relationships with local, regional, and national print and electronic media outlets to increase public awareness of his/her assigned sports programs.The assistant is independently responsible for the game management & multi-media efforts (department website; television shows; play by play or color commentary duties for radio broadcasts; coordination of webcasting/video-streaming of intercollegiate contests) as well as the creation and production of press releases, media guides, feature stories, and other communication-related duties for each sport program they are assigned. The selected candidate will have excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Athletic Communications Office Daily Responsibilities:
    • Daily responsibilities include reporting of intercollegiate contest results, management of media outlets, scheduling interviews with coaches & student-athletes, coordinating photo-shoots, promoting teams and student-athletes for local, regional & national awards, representing the athletic department at local, regional & national media functions, and supervising multiple student employees working in the office.In addition, the assistant will be responsible for coordinating all aspects of the "End of Year" department banquet which includes, creating, producing, editing, and commentating the "End of Year" sports video and writing the event script.
  • Multimedia Efforts:
    • Responsible for the production and management of various multimedia platforms in an effort to promote Stony Brook University Athletic achievements and news.
    • Website: Participate in the development, design and daily maintenance of the Athletic Department website, Assistant will independently monitor and maintain information and communicate changes and adjustments with the web hosting company as they relate to his/her assigned sport programs.
    • Radio/TV Broadcasts: Act as the primary contact for radio/television production and talent staff.Responsible for providing team statistical background as well as features/highlight stories of coaches and/or student-athletes.Additional duties include performing play by play or color commentary duties for radio broadcasts of select contests.
    • Video-Streaming: The Assistant will independently produce all aspects of video-streaming for his/her assigned intercollegiate programs including scheduling and production.These contests will be carried on the athletic department website as well as made available for podcasts.
  • Game Management:
    • The Assistant is responsible for the management and supervision of courtside and press box personnel at home contests of assigned sport programs (must also assist with Football, Men's Basketball & Women's Basketball), to include but not limited to:
      • Ensure accurate official statistics.
      • Scoreboard operations.
      • Assign public address duties, fill in as needed.
      • Accommodate media by providing access (to press box, field, locker-room and press conference), information, and statistics.
      • Perform play by play or color commentary duties for internet broadcasts of selected contests.
      • Schedule pre- or post-game interviews with media and coordinate on-site press conferences.
      • Prepare game programs and game notes.
      • Create, produce, and write post-game releases for dispersal to local, regional and national media outlets.
  • Publications Development:
    • Responsible for the creation, preparation, production, dispersal, and approval of media guides, recruiting brochures (including photographs), and schedule cards for assigned sports programs. This involves meeting with individual coaches, writing copy, and independently creating the layout and design with a desktop publisher. Write, design and produce postseason guides for teams participating in playoffs.Additional publication responsibilities include working with the External Services staff in producing the fundraising "Annual Report" & quarterly fundraising newsletters, sport program newsletters, and game programs for specific teams.
  • Media Contact:
    • The Assistant will be the primary media contact for assigned intercollegiate programs.Responsibilities include initiating and cultivating relationships with local, regional, and national print and electronic media outlets to increase public awareness of student-athletes, the athletics program, and the university.Additional responsibilities include independence and autonomy with regard to travel to away contests, daily updates on teams through statistical reporting and updating of website, preparation of game notes and program for each game, interaction with and providing media with team information at games and in response to requests, handling of all media responsibilities on game day, attending media luncheons and banquets, all post-game efforts including story, box-score, statistics and reporting results to media outlets, and pitching stories to local, regional and national media. Additional responsibilities include compiling statistics at the conclusion of all home athletic contests and selected away contests, reporting information to media outlets, reporting all stats/awards and/or individual accomplishments to media daily, and filing weekly reports with Conference Office as requested. This position will be responsible for researching and writing feature stories about student-athletes' accomplishments and department news for publishing in newsletters and on the department website.Included in this responsibility is "pitching" these feature stories to external media outlets.
  • Graphic Design:
    • Functions as one of the primary graphic design artists and writers for the Department of Athletics.This includes providing creativity, originality, and design support for department functions/initiatives such as posters, flyers, brochures, invitations, newsletters, banquets, etc.Responsibilities include the creation, design, layout, and editing of these department materials through desktop publishing.In addition, this includes writing articles for various department and university publications dispersed to the university community, alumni, and external media outlets.

Required Qualifications (as evidenced by attached resume):
Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Two (2) years of full-time experience working in an Athletic Communications/Sports Information/Media Relations office (collegiate or professional) or a sports journalism and/or marketing/promotions environment.

Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Experience with desktop publishing software. Experience with statistical software. Experience with multi-media platforms. Previous experience with a Division I Athletic Program. Experience in a professional sports organization.
