The Shared FACS Facility at Stanford University is seeking a Flow Cytometry Specialist to join our service center team. The facility is a highly utilized flow cytometry service center that provides consistent, high-quality, state-of-the-art flow cytometric tools and applications to researchers throughout Stanford University and research institutions/companies in the region. We are seeking an energetic person, who enjoys interacting with a wide variety of researchers to assist them with their research projects.

Primary goals of this shared resource lab are to provide flow cytometry analyzer and cell sorting services to the Stanford community. If you enjoy teaching and learning about projects ongoing in many of the science departments across campus, then this position offers a great opportunity.

The Flow Cytometry Specialist will use their expertise in flow cytometry and sorting to teach, assist, and troubleshoot flow cytometry and sorting experiments in collaboration with researchers. Willingness to learn new techniques and troubleshoot technical problems is a requirement. The successful applicant will be trained on the cutting edge of flow cytometry research and will assist users in novel research using multicolor sorting and analysis. As with any busy laboratory environment, excellent personal communication skills and the ability to juggle multiple duties is a must.

Duties include:

  • Independently operate cell analysis and sorting instruments in the Stanford Shared FACS Facility service center.
  • Perform routine maintenance on facility equipment, including startup and QC of cytometers.
  • Become familiar with all software used in the facility and assist facility users in learning to use this software.
  • Understand and utilize common and unique biological applications, cell handling techniques, and reagents used by researchers and to assist them in designing and optimizing their FACS experiments.
  • Work with research staff on implementation of updates to FACS facility instruments and computer capabilities.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule and to work in a BSL-2 environment to meet the needs of the facility.
  • Provide training to assist self-operators to improve their skills in all aspects of FACS and CyTOF instrument function.
  • Assist researchers in data interpretation.
  • Act as a resource for researchers in designing experiments and in evaluating results.
  • Take responsibility for non-routine instrument maintenance and repair (complementing instrument manufacturer service).
  • Perform general lab maintenance as needed; maintain lab stock, manage chemical inventory and safety records, and provide general lab support as needed.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

The requisite combination of education and/or experience in the field to work independently, and to serve as a resource for users; to train new users, and help self-operators solve problems with their instrument operations

A highly qualified candidate will have 2 or more years experience with one or more of the following instrumentation systems: BD Influx, BD FACSAria/Fusion/S8, BD Symphony, Cytek Aurora, Agilent Novocyte

OR one year experience operating a flow cytometer and additional 2 years of experience in a related field or in education

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED): Bachelor's degree in related scientific field and two years of relevant work experience; or Master’s degree in a related scientific field.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

  • Comprehensive understanding of scientific principles.
  • General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs, databases, and scientific applications.
  • Strong analytical skills and excellent judgment.
  • Ability to maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.
  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance is essential.
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to accurately complete detailed work.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand, lift, carry, push and pull objects weighing over 40 pounds.
  • Occasionally sit, kneel, crawl, reach and work above shoulders, sort and file paperwork or parts.
  • Rarely climb, scrub, sweep, mop, chop and mix or operate hand and foot controls.
  • Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job.
  • Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in a dusty, dirty, and odorous environment.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The expected pay range for this position is $71,000 to $88,000 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
