Flow Cytometry Specialist

The Stanford University Shared FACS Facility is seeking a highly skilled Flow Cytometry Specialist to provide expert support to researchers across the university and regional institutions. As a key member of our team, you will play a crucial role in delivering high-quality flow cytometric tools and applications.

About the Role

The primary goals of this shared resource lab are to provide flow cytometry analyzer and cell sorting services to the Stanford community. This position offers a great opportunity for individuals who enjoy teaching and learning about ongoing projects in various science departments across campus.

Responsibilities

  • Operate cell analysis and sorting instruments in the Stanford Shared FACS Facility service center with expertise.
  • Perform routine maintenance on facility equipment, including startup and quality control of cytometers.
  • Become proficient in all software used in the facility and assist users in learning to utilize this software.
  • Understand and apply common and unique biological applications, cell handling techniques, and reagents used by researchers to assist them in designing and optimizing FACS experiments.
  • Collaborate with research staff on implementing updates to FACS facility instruments and computer capabilities.
  • Provide training to self-operators to enhance their skills in all aspects of FACS and CyTOF instrument function.
  • Assist researchers in data interpretation and provide guidance on experiment design and result evaluation.
  • Take responsibility for non-routine instrument maintenance and repair, complementing instrument manufacturer service.
  • Perform general lab maintenance as needed, manage chemical inventory, and maintain safety records.

Requirements

  • Comprehensive understanding of scientific principles and their applications.
  • Proficiency in computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs, databases, and scientific applications.
  • Strong analytical skills and excellent judgment in decision-making.
  • Ability to maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.
  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to complete detailed work accurately.

Working Conditions

  • May require working in close proximity to blood-borne pathogens.
  • May require work in an environment where animals are used for teaching and research.
  • Position may at times require the employee to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present.
  • Employee must perform tasks that require the use of personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses and shoes, protective clothing, and gloves, and possibly a respirator.
  • May require extended or unusual work hours based on research requirements and business needs.

Pay Range

The expected pay range for this position is $71,000 to $88,000 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position.
